giving away hydrangea q. "alice"

Anyone who wants a big, beautiful oakleaf hydrangea "Alice" and can drive to Lexington MA is welcome to dig it up and take it. It will take two people to dig and drag it; you'll need to tie it up and I think you'll need a truck.

It is 6' tall about 4'wide.

Daffodil33 and dw Polly have taken a few things from my garden but he has n't answered my email.

I'm learning to 'just say no' to plants that can't be relocated to better places.

Freecycle or Craig's list is my next stop. The saw is the final solution. But I'd rather give it away than kill it.

I am amazed that no one has taken you up on this, Marie. I hope that you find a home for it. It wouldn't be quite hardy enough to grow well here, I don't think.

For folks who aren't familiar with oak leaf hydrangeas, they have nice flowers and great fall color. Generally they are large shrubs that will grow well and bloom in part shade.

A few years ago, there was a thread about the number of people here in zone 5 who had lost them over the winter. So it is a plant that is unlikely to survive a fall transplant into zone 5.

Marie, we have friend in Northborough that we visit occasionally. If you need it out this fall I'm probably not in the running. If spring is OK, let me know and I will probably be near Lexington at some point. If it performs in shade I'm interested.

Sure, I could wait till spring. I probably would anyway.

BTW, I've transplanted 'most' of my hydrangeas- because I always plant too darned close- . They've done fine transplanted in fall. We are zone 6; with an occasional drop to colder than zero F. All my oakleafs are shy bloomers but I really think they need more sun not because the buds are killed by cold.

Marie I would totally take you up on your offer though I have no way of transporting :) I also seem to have horrible luck with any type of hydrangea for some reason

i hope it finds a wonderful home though!

Marie, how much sun do you think they need? My next door neighbor has a spongy swamp area of her lawn she's trying to rectify, I keep thinking that I'd love to have her swampy area for things like persicaria and this hydrangea. But, right now I'm more concerned more about sun than water. How much sun does yours get right now? I know you think it needs more.

Oakleaf hydrangeas hate wet feet. I haven't killed one that way,but every thing I've read on them says poorly drained wet soil is deadly. I have 3 Pee Wees in dappled shade, 1 noid facing south but overhung by big winterberries and Alice probably gets only a few hours of bright sun, and not direct at that. Ruby Slippers hasn't bloomed at all yet, but it's fall foliage is so beautiful I'd probably grow it even if it hardly bloomed.

Oakleafs are "supposed" to be more sun tolerant than macs, but they've not had the chance to be tested in my garden.
