This type of question comes up frequently. Would you consider something other than gray?

I also have trouble seeing the undertones in paint but I stumbled onto a great trick, when I was trying to select a gray paint. Tape the swatches you are considering next to each other. The undertones become very apparent. I was quite surprised, some were blue, others purple, others green. It made selecting a gray very easy. Bear in mind though that the lighting, furniture, flooring, etc. in each room will also impact the colour so you may not find one colour that works for the entire floor.

What paint colors (name/number) have you tried?

Gray is tricky.... for some reason any shade of gray turns violet blue in my house. I don’t know why since I have tons of windows & sunshine year around. I’d consider another color ? For my living & dining rooms I had them painted Urban Putty, very neutral not bluish.

Great advice. That's what I was looking for. I was using Sherwin Williams Passive grey SW7064. Seems pretty darned grey, even as at the base.

Passive Grey belongs to the green-yellow hue family - just past the middle. So it's more green=yellow than it is yellow-green. (if that makes sense)

So what that tells me is with the quality of light you have to work with, you need to move up more into the yellow hue family. Like March Wind in the diagram above.

March Wind is a bit darker than Passive. But the extra depth might help to pull of a sense of grayness in the light you have to work with. Try it and see what it looks like.

Have you tried Dulux - Zepplin? it is a true grey with no undertones.

Zepplin is a good one too. If you look on the color wheel above, Zepplin would plot out at 75° and you can see March Wind at about 90°. Zepplin is closer to the yellow-red (orange) hue family.
