Connecting in law suite to log home

I have a log home and detached log garage. We are looking to connect an inlaw space either with the garage or on the garage footprint using the garage footers. This has turned out to be very frustrating. After several months of massing ideas, they just don't seem to blend with original log home. Its getting very frustrating so I am looking for some advice. Attached is the existing home and some of the massing that we have been given by a local young architect. Nothing looks like it belongs. Help!

I think your architect is too ambitious. How about a simple breezeway connecting the two? Can be open or closed depending on your most prevalent climate.

that would work if it wasn't so complicated....need to incorporate a MBR suite above garage to expand the living space....2 to 3 br plus inlaw so it has to be more of a 2 story breezeway with access to MBR suite via cat walk or whatever. Right now we just cant find an exterior look that fits in

What a beautiful cabin you have!

I'm not sure I'm following...it sounds like the inlaw suite involves a lot of stairs.

Am I correct?

This sounds more like we should stop calling it an "inlaw suite" and start calling it "an addition"....

Thank you....and yes it would be an addition lol ...with a private in law suite at ground level... but we need a connector to separate

Will the ground floor in-law suite have a kitchen, living room and bathroom? Then you want 2 or three bedrooms on the second floor, presumably with one bathroom?

To me, the transformation of the garage looks in keeping with what's there, but all the connectors look bizarrely modern, which is what throws it off. Perhaps he's trying to keep a feel of two houses + a connector, but I think you want a lot more than that, but I'm not sure how compatible "log cabin" is with sort of a McMansion outcome, so you might want to consider some overall changes, or be prepared to essentially make a separate house with a connector, rather than addition -- then each can have more of a log house feel. I don't understand why the new plan *has* to have a two-story connector, as opposed to reworking things a different way.

aunt thelma, because they are adding 'big house space' over the inlaws space.

1. you've checked that this accessory apartment is allowed in your town bylaws? some people really dont know, and its not the architects job to find out.

2. always have in mind it might be cheaper to buy what you want than build what you can.

3. some day you'll have to sell this. you might do better building on behind the house for YOUR extra space, rather than this really giant front. keep the passage way one story.
