good lord. did he cut the tile w/a butter knife? first off, he needs an actual tile blade for his tile saw. That is completely unsatisfactory. As for the edging against the wall, they make bull nose tiles just for this purpose. (see my photo below)

is the bottom tile in the niche even sloped outward? what are you going to do when that box holds onto the water? wipe it out every time you're finished?

I have a similar tile. My tile guys were experts. want o see? I'm showing you this so you can see what exact cuts and proper measurements (around the box/windows) should look like. it takes proper prep and layout in order to get everything even.

and if he tells you grout will hide the edges, he's full of crap.

you are paying your GC to hire people who specialize in certain trades and are experts at their jobs. tell him you are not happy with this work. I noticed the part against the wood/tile didn't seem to be waterproofed completely?

how was this space waterproofed? any pics? what is he charging you just for this shower?

I would not pay for this, or pay for the wasted tile and the redo. and yes, get a different tile person. Maybe call a few in for estimates to fix this fiasco. DO NOT let the same tiler do your other rooms. If he failed at this relatively easy tile job, he won't get better if the others are harder.

So sorry. Yes, this may be a good time to discuss your expectations with the GC and ask for a more qualified installer. Tear off down to the studs, cement board and all as it's always a "patch job" if you don't start from square one. Make sure you discuss expectations, including the lay-out, with your GC here forward. For example, I can't see the entire wall, but where the niche is, the tile should generally be centered on it, like this photo (poor photo quality but you get the idea). Silver lining is that you recognize this now before further work is done in your home. Good luck with the rest of your renovation.

Vet the subs. Not just the GC. Honestly, we have had more GC's contact us in past year looking for a more professional tile contractor to work with them because of problems like these. Some have admitted that poor installations have cost them with re-dos. But then, we vet the GC and determine whether the quality of their work (and their business practices) are consistent with our own standards. And we are not going to give them the "low bid" to help them, and us, get the job. There is a serious shortage of skilled labor, especially in certain trades and geographical areas. Skilled craftsmen are retiring. Younger replacements in low supply.

A big problem is renovations these day are using higher quality materials due the internet making what was once only high end available to the average renovation. This creates an issue because when one is installing 99 cent tile vs $9.99 tile your expectations for a quality job also go up. No I am not saying even a cheaper tile job should be sub par but homeowners will accept lot more with the old the grout will hide it answer.

Everybody wants to skip the apprentice stage. Everybody today thinks they want to be a flipper so tomorrow I am no matter who's house gets ruined in the process. Add to this day laborers and its a nightmare.

How can someone do a quality job when they don't know what a quality job is? the other day I saw someone working on a house in flip flops sitting on a bucket cutting marble mosaics with a pair on nips and a hammer and screwdriver. I am not kidding. Welcome to CA where every job gets outbid by an illegal and homeowners that just don't care as long as it can sell the house.

You need to find a REAL tile setter not someone who installs tiles. People stop thinking you know tile work or any trade unless you have put in the time to actually do the work. It is insulting to true craftsman and woman who take the time to educate themselves and learn a trade.
