Asphalt is cheaper and you can have it renewed every few years with sealer coating. You could do asphalt on the main entry drive and use stone pavers near the home to mark as a parking court.

The first step before replacing the driveway is to get rid of all the invading tree roots. Save yourself the later aggravation.

At least 95% of the driveways in our area are asphalt. We are in an area with freezing temperatures. Our asphalt driveway, on our wooded lot, is 30 years old. We have never had any heaving from roots.

Asphalt melts snow. I am so jealous of my neighbors with asphalt drives for that reason. I think I have finally gotten over my slight snobbishness (no one does asphalt where I'm from) and will do it. Pavers stink for kids to skate, etc.

You could do gravel. Also, they are doing asphalt covered with gravel. If you click on the photo with the gate, it should take you to the page and you can read about this process in the comments. Our neighbors have a red colored asphalt driveway. Maybe you could check with your local company to see if they do a colored asphalt.

A good paving company would grind off like 8" of that existing surface and put down good coarse substrate that roots wouldn't enjoy growing in very much

I agree with ibtanyderi - asphalt would look out of place. I would just do a natural kind of driveway (maybe pea stone or something like that) then do a concrete pad just in front of the house, where you park.

We have had an asphalt driveway in a northern U.S. city and it is not fun. It has to be resurfaced just about every fall. We have had gravel. Pain and weeds are issue. But, doing that driveway in cement would cost a bundle. So some combination will probably be best. If you hit the lottery, cement to house, and pavers in circle in front of house. Good luck. My parents are the last people to do asphalt, so when they did, they used a light grey aggregate so it just looks like an awkwardly perfect lane of pea stone.

I live in Connecticut, so asphalt is a no brainer! It would be rare to see anything else!
