Firstly decide which herbs you want to grow. Research each one separately. Some may be unsuitable for your climate. Herbs are not all the same as regards their growth type and needs. There are annuals, perennials, small plants, shrubs and trees.

Bear in mind that growing herbs indoors is far more difficult than outside and even if successful you may not get quantities sufficient for your uses. Do not expect to be able to sow seeds now and have herbs to use this winter. You'd need to start with plants.

You can purchase seeds or plants from multiple outlets. You just need to do the research.

You may want to try the HERBALISM forum, too. That forum focuses more on the actual uses and remedies. It seems to me that you aren't sure what kinds of plants you should be growing.

I'd like to emphasize what floral said....herbs can be very fussy when grown inside. You may need a lot more fresh product than you think and they take longer than you may realize to produce a harvestable crop.

Information on every entry, and usually will say what is safe to use if you’re just learning, and what should be used with caution or with guidance from a pro. Growing info too. Website should have much of this if not more. I purchased several of his books and they were excellent. He doesn’t have everything but darn near.
