Yes i would like to brighten up the room.

White walls and then paint the ceiling blue. Maybe something like Aleutian or Icelandic. Both Sherwin Williams colors.

It's your son's room, let him decide. Would you want him choosing the wall color for the master bedroom. He is the person who lives and sleeps in the room. If he picks a color you don't like remember, he's old enough to make this decision and live with it.

I would remove the corner cabinet and install floor to ceiling curtains.

Here is a link to SW Icelandic blue. We painted our TV room in this color and it's a nice light-mid blue with a little hint of purple and gray. In our house, looks nothing like the baby blue that shows up online! Before we moved, our sons' room was painted in a Benjamin Moore color that was similarly slightly purple and it made it not babyish but also allowed other colors to look good against it. I can't remember the name - something berry? I copied that color from another friend with boys.

Also, by the way, I found great budget upholstered bed choices on Amazon in the Zinus product line. Just bought a dark blue in a Full size for a guest room overhaul for $159.
