Haven't canned for a few months

The flood in Texas a few months ago ruined about half my stuff. Ultimately, frazzled, I decided to move into a tiny apartment and gave away about another 1/4. This included all my canning stuff, the canner, all the jars, the fancy jar boxes, even the food as it was the height of summer and I did not want sealed jars in a very hot moving truck for hours, I was afraid the seals would fail because of the extreme heat as the apartment was hours away, I moved far enough away from the coast that I am (just now) starting to feel a little safer from hurricanes.

Despite my frazzlement, in a way it worked out to be a blessing. Most of the 1/4 stuff was given to a nice family I had just met and also to some of the members of their church. They were a couple, looked to be in their mid 30s, and they adopted and fostered children and have quite a sizable family. The husband is the canner and I'm sure all the stuff I gave them will come in handy as their fosters are mostly teens, and they eat a lot.

I obviously will not be able to can any more home grown veggies, but the flood ruined the freezer too and when I come across good buys like the cheap turkeys they are selling now I feel like even though this place is tiny, I can can up some food.

So I will probably wait until Black Friday, see if I can get a deal on a canner.

Could someone with the 23 qt Presto please measure the height with the top on, I only have 16 inches until the stove overhang with the fan so I don't know if I have the room for that one.

I was looking at the 16 qt, I could always just buy 2 of those if the 23qt is too tall. Do I need to buy a separate weight set if I get those?

Some models of the 16 qt come with the 3 piece weight set and no gauge but some do not - they have the gauge and the regulator but not the weights. So you'll just have to see which you can find.

    EX: 16 qt canners

PS they may be the same height as the 23 qt. Don't have one to measure.

Thank you for the link, I went ahead and bought two of those 16 qt shown in the link. They seem like a perfect size, the 23 qt was going to be too close to the overhang.

Did you notice they seem to be the same height as the 23 qt are?

I did notice that. And the Amazon ad says the 16qt is 14.8 and the 23 qt. is 15.4. That differs from your measurement, I do not know why.

Since you made a good point that the burner might add .5 of an inch and I only have 16 inches to work with, I decided it might be prudent to go with the 16 qt. While the .6 difference between the two canners isn't much, it is all the difference in the world if the canner can't fit in the space I have.

Well mind is an older model so I suppose newer ones might be a bit taller. Mine has the raised center just like the newer ones so that wouldn't explain the difference. Or its possible they are giving you the dimensions of the box. Otherwise I don't know why the difference either. Hope they work for you.

Canners arrived, are nowhere near the dimensions Amazon posted.

Surely not taller??? Hope they are shorter and will work ok on your stove.

Oh great. Lucille, I hope they fit in your space, after all that's happened you deserve to be able to get back to canning!

I believe most of the time the dimensions posted on Amazon are the size of the box (shipping size). Amazon does have a feedback system set up to allow customers to post questions about a product. They then send out emails to people who have purchased the item and ask if they can answer the question. If an answer is provided, it's published on Amazon. Doesn't cost anything to ask the question, but it might take a week or so to get feedback.

It just goes to show you, you can learn something new every day. If Dave says one thing and Amazon says another, I'm going with Dave from now on.

When I first tried out the two canners on my stove I did not realize that the back one was off center due to the stove control knobs, so I will only be able to use 1 canner at a time. I'm wondering whether I can move a full canner off the stove before it is depressurized in order to save a half an hour on the next canner load?

I went ahead and ordered a canner element for the stove, I plan to do a lot of canning and do not want to have to buy the apartment complex a new stove when I move out.
