I am planning on having floating shelves in my new kitchen and they need to be quite sturdy since they will be holding cast iron pots and pans. My contractor had no experience with this so I have been doing the research myself. I now know that the common way to do this is to attach pipes to the studs using custom hardware and then attach the shelf....but most of the information I have read suggests slipping a box (a torsion box?) over the protruding pipe to serve as the shelf. I would prefer to use a solid piece of wood with holes bored in the back which will give me more of a rustic look as the wood will not need to be so squared off as a constructed box would be. Any experience with this?
