Help needed with this shield insect

last modified: 8 years ago

I juat Went outside to take pics ( for other reasons) of my 4 FLF trees growing in containers w gritty mix ( all 2.5-3yrs old ) and quickly discovered to my horror at least 2 of these insects quickly on each tree ( there were likely more but In the dark I had Seen enough in the 2 minutes it took me to find 8 of them scattered about). It looks to me like a shield bug/ stink bug of some sort but can anyone please tell me

1.exactly what it is,

2.if they could be harming my FLF trees in any way

3. why they might be present in this number ( does it lead one to think I have another problem/ Infestation they are interested in?

Side note: I dont don’t see them during the day but they were surely bundled up in the leaf nooks for the night ! And as hard as it was to leave them on there at least one more night now i have learned to not touch unknown insects and eggs until I have educated myself on If they are of the harmful or beneficial variety... so thanks for enlightening me!
