what should what match?

last modified: 8 years ago

I have a condo in a high-rise. I am buying a new living room set, a sofa, loveseat and a contemporary wingback chair, or instead of a love seat maybe a chaise? I would like all the pieces to match but I realize that is not done anymore, so the sofa or chaise and the sofa should match and the wingback chair a different fabric? I am also thinking I should switch the living room and dining room, because then the sofa could be on the long wall, which looks out to the view and that is the only place i can fit a sofa as long as 85". Thanks for your input!

It is difficult to figure out your floor plan from the pics. Could you please draw a basic floor plan with wall measurements? To me it looks like the long wall is in between both rooms? Your room might work better with two love seats and a chair/chaise (I will wait for floor plan). As to your question regarding matching fabrics: You can use the same fabrics for all the furniture then use patterns and accent colors with your pillows and rug.

If you own it and can do so, paint or stain the parquet black. Get a reverse chaise sofa so you can flip the chaise and change the arrangement when you want.

phuninthesun, the room is long, but narrow. I just so happen to have the layout

15'9 x 28'6 There are two doorways in the living room, one to the kitchen (by the dining room) and one to the foyer. The wider opening is to the foyer by the TV. So the longest wall I have is between the two doorways. Across from the long wall is a wall of windows. Thanks.

The sofa in the picture, which use to be in my den at my last town-home is 78" long. So you can see my living room is not very wide.

I would let the hunt decide what "matchy matches". When you find pieces you like and then see the fabric possibilities get what speaks to you. Two hits of any element will keep things looking like a garage sale, but there are pieces that stand alone in a room if they are fabulous enough.

Nice space! Looks like you have a lovely view. You feature a few white transitional living rooms in your ideabook. That would look great here.

Rina, thank you so much for taking the time and sending me these pictures! The first one with the gray fireplace is similar to mine except I have an angled wall, which drives me crazy and the room is not as wide. I am thinking of putting a fireplace on the angled wall. Your pictures gave me some my ideas, thanks again.

I would do a sectional in a solid color and do a pattern on the chair. To me that makes more sense than to do a sofa and love seat. You also need an area rug to anchor the space. I would select the rug first, then find a solid sofa and patterned fabric that work with the rug. Good luck!

These pictures that I took make my room look so big and wide. I wish it was!

wicketwhite I love that room from my ideabook, the first one especially. I really like the sofa, but my living room/dining room is not that big. I would love to buy creamy white upholstery furniture, but having a young grand daughter and no family room makes that impossible now. Thank so much for your input, appreciated.

M&M Interiors, I was thinking a 78" inch sofa, a 60' (or so) love seat and a chair. I was going to purchase the furniture first, but now I will rethink this and look for the area rugs first. Did you ever hear of Hallagen they make sofas? I am also looking at Harden (expensive and big but I love the Debra sofa) and Taylor King. Did you like these manufacturers? Thank you.

Annie Santulli Designs, I thought about a sectional, but it would have to be a very small one. What about a sofa and a chaise? I like to change my pillows when the seasons change. Thank you for your time.

Chris stack I am not familiar with Halogen, but Harden is a good line of furniture.

If you get a sofa and a loveseat you want them to match, the chairs however can be different.

Hallagan is a good locally- made brand of upholstered furniture, similar in quality to Vanguard or Smith Bros.
