Paint interior doors black ?

I am seduced by the idea of painting our interior doors black. I was thinking Sherwin Williams Black Fox. We have a 2 accent walls in that color.

My better half thinks that it is too bold a move .. will make the room feel heavy. Just keep white doors.

I am now in 2 minds and seek your opinion.

I painted a spare door at the end of the hallway to see how it would look ( photo below) . My son says, it looks like a "portal into space"

What would you guys think ?

Would you paint the doors black ?

Where are the accent walls? Some on here love black interior doors, I don’t. I prefer to get my black accents via furniture, accessories & frames on my artwork. I think your son is right about the door at the end of the hallway. What is the decor going to be? Traditional, modern or ???

I think they would look like black holes into ?????. Far more interesting to me w/b to paint same color as walls to make them “invisible”

The accent wall is in the family room. The other wall is in another bedroom.

I was thinking of keeping interior closet doors white but just doing french doors and foyer, hallway doors black.

I think your French doors & hallway doors look better in white, especially with the white crown & baseboards.

I saw that article and that made me think more about black doors to begin with. So confused....

Interesting thought about keeping the doors same color as walls.

Thinking about painting one of my doors black too. Following...

Your hallway has zero natural light. Black doors will make it feel like a dark tunnel.

Hi claire, we have 2 sun tunnels ( 14 inch diameter) in the hallway.. not put in yet ( contractors are still working on it)...so it may not be as dark afterwards...

But... it is a good point. As my son said, portal into space .. not sure if he meant that as a good thing or not :-)

I would definitely paint the french doors and leave it at there. The rest I would leave white.

Well, what do you like better?

It could look neat with art work, maybe a runner.

While I think they can look beautiful in some rooms, I know that they are like dark floors...they show a lot of dust. My friend has them, and they need to be wiped/dusted a lot.

We love the idea of a bold paint color on a door! High-contrast is always a striking look. Your hallway- as with most hallways- is pretty dark as is and adding a significant amount of such a saturated color might overwhelm such a narrow space. Consider painting the egress doors black and perhaps change hardware on other doors to a matte black to bring in a little of that bold contrast. Best of luck with your project!

@nosoccermom I love it ! the black doors look amazing.

My spouse feels that the doors would have looked better if we had a lighter shade of gray on the walls. We have repose gray on the walls and ceiling.

Like all things in home decorating, the decision I guess depends on layout, lighting. Still thinking what to do.. maybe not do black but a slightly darker shade of gray .. like SW Dovetail. That may "soften" the look but not look as "dramatic"

we were on the fence as well(not black just other color)

what made us stay on the white side of the fence-we were so burnt out by the time of doors decision( two years gut remodel) I just couldn't think anymore, and I need things to be highly considered. If my brain in the stage when it can't consider I push the decision for later..(well if I can lol)

Right now I'm thinking of painting one small awkward window the wall color. Our handyman said "it will look like a hole in the wall"

well maybe it's my intention since that awkward white really bothers me.

I think though your hallway as other posters said(and as our hallway is too) might be too narrow to pull out that black

    maybe softer lighter color?

oh sorry you just wrote it as I was typing

you have many doors..black might be too heavy a look

(BTW wanted to paint a trim too and our GC looked at me like I'm crazy..which he often did..then he was mostly pleasantly surprized at the results lol..but as I said that was a wrong stage of remodel lol. I just gave up)

no, I woudn't do only French doors..not in your space..too many doors to pull that off or so I think

I would go for it. I love my dark doors (we did brown/black b/c with our wall colors, brown was more complementary). Have them throughout. I still wish we had black doors though. One day!

Follow up on this thread. I decided to not go with black doors .. Decided to go with white doors -- SW Snowbound 7004.

In the end, I think the lighting and the wall color was not conducive to black doors even though I love it.

I'll post pictures after all is painted.
