Suggestions for new garden hose

We need to replace two of our garden hoses. I'm not sad to see them go -- the water that comes out of them has a very unpleasant odor and I wonder if it's even safe to use it on edibles. With so many choices these days -- coil... traditional tube rolled into a circle... flexible.... -- it's hard to know what's best. Durability and kink-free are a must. Thank you!

The most durable hose is a genuine rubber one. You can get Craftsmen brand rubber hoses from Sears, I think the big box stores have their own brands of real rubber. Downsides are cost, they are more expensive, as they age their surface will oxidize slightly and leave some black residue on your hands, it's harmless but annoying if you aren't wearing gloves, and if you hate wrestling with hoses you will really hate a rubber hose, they seem to have a mind of their own. I have a 10 year old Craftsmen rubber hose that is like new while cheaper vinyl type hoses have worn out in a few years. As far as kink-free, I don't think that exists. I have kinked every type of hose I've owned.

Do NOT get one of those crinkle hoses that have been advertized the last couple of years!

You can smell the chemicals coming out of them and there is a warning to not drink from them! If you can't let your kid drink from a hose, do you want to water your veges with that hose?????? NT

Thank you. I ordered this Craftsman Premium Rubber Garden Hose, to be delivered tonight, free shipping. :-) I ordered just 1 since the other hose is very rarely ever used in that spot.

I second the heavy duty black rubber hose. It's the only kind I'll buy. I also recommend a good heavy duty hose reel too. Makes it so you don't have to wrestle with the hose as much.

Another vote for Craftsman. Same comments as from kentc. Mine is almost 20 years old -- bought it when I first came to Oregon -- and still in excellent condition. Previously had them longterm in SoCal. Never had any split or leak.

Hope your hose is a good one, Auntie.

I love those lightweight hoses (the ones Nancyjane hates!). Handling the weight of a regular hose is too much. The early crinkle hoses sprung leaks, the current ones are much better. I don't think there is a hose that is safe to drink from unless it's specifically for transferring drinking water. As kids we drank from the hose all summer.
