Only ones I know use Etsy. Lots of quilters sell there. Do a search and you'll see what's available. Most of us quilt for ourselves and to keep our sanity, not sell.

I've had several comments from people with no idea of what is involved in making a quilt. Usually along the line of "It costs how much? I can get a quilt at Big Box Store for $$$" - a ridiculously small amount.

I have done only one commission. For a friend. She paid for the materials and my labor. It was the first time I kept track of my time. Boy, was that an eye opener for me. I have used that information when explaining what a quilt can cost.

One time I kept track of the time it took to complete a quilt. A lap size quilt approximately 54 x 54" took me 30 hours to complete. Cutting, sewing, quilting, and binding. I'm more experienced now and might be able to d it faster. In any case,at $10 an hour, that's $300 for labor alone.

I've done commissioned quilts in the past. Customers who truly appreciate the craft will willingly pay a fair price; those who don't understand what goes into a homemade quilt will gasp!

I don't do commissioned quilts much right now as I deal with the busy schedules of my 4 kids...

I do understand about that most precious commodity...time.

As part of the learning process, I found someone selling 2 for 30 on my local Craigslist so I went for it. One in bad condition (I can make pillows, maybe?) One in good condition. I would guestimate that they're from the 50's maybe and are hand quilted. Can post a photo if anyone is interested.

This is a very fun lesson indeed. I think about where the scraps of fabric came from...and who did the work...I find it somewhat humbling.
