Glass Canning Lids

Does anyone know a source for the old fashioned glass canning lids?

I would like to use such for long-term storage, not canning. I've noticed that the metal lids seem to corrode over time that are on the jars of some things I store in my largest glass jars. I was remembering the glass lids and wondered if they still exist.

The only glass lids available that I can think of are the ones for the old bail-type jars. They still make them but you need the bail and rubber gasket too. Otherwise why not use the readily available plastic lids?

Weck jars have glass lids. I found the best price for them on the manufacturers website.

Thanks for the info, sonni, I will check their website. digdirt: I don't think the plastic seals very well, but perhaps I just am not doing something right.

My objection to the Wrek jars - other than the price - is the metal clips used to hold the lids in place corrode too. With the plastic lids just a small piece of Saran wrap on the top of the jar before screwing on the plastic cap gives you an air-tight seal.

The debate between glass and plastic will go on.... I'm in the glass camp because glass has no leaching chemicals, better durability - obviously outside of dropping - and though not all glass jars may be used for freezing, the weck jars can and because they just look better. I've been using Weck for many years now and have had no rust or corrosion on the clips. I also have plastic storage jars, most especially for lunch boxes, but I've gotten complaints that the lids leak! (I suspect - though not sure - lid may not have been screwed on tightly!)

The plastic lids do leak, regardless of how well they are screwed on. To seal them tightly, add a canning lid between the jar and the plastic lid. It is now tightly sealed. This will prevent the problem of having the metal rings rusting over time, if that has been a problem for you. I remove my rings from canned goods, but for dry storage, or in the freezer, I use the plastic lids with the canning lid to make the good seal.

My problem is actually with the metal disc-lid, which always seem to start to rust with long-term storage.

Is the lid rusting on the inside or the outside? Personally I have never had a lid rust - rings yes - but not the lids. Perhaps you can find a drier location for storing? How old are the jars of food when the lids begin to rust?

Now they will develop some discoloration on the inside with highly acid foods. That I do see.

It's the inside of the lid that rusts. I put the jars of nuts, etc. in the fridge or freezer.
