Our new house has an open floor plan without a separate dining room. Currently we have an island that we eat all meals at and a formal dining room table that will not be coming with us. I hope to put in an island in the new house at some point, but for now, I need a table that can handle everyday use as well as accommodate 8 people twice a year for holidays. Ideally this table would be slightly more rustic and casual. It would also have be easily cleaned as I would prefer not to use a tablecloth.

Any recommendations for a table that can serve double duty for both an everyday meals and a formal dinner? Is the best option to just put a piece of glass over wood and remove it when extended? Is there another material out there we haven't considered?
