Area rug help!!

last modified: 8 years ago

I would still lke to change both area rugs for my open concept living and kitchen. The pattern living chair includes beige, black and taupe/gray. This is my BIGGEST challenge due to the distinct pattern. The ottoman is charcoal gray. I also have a blue dining table in the mix that I also need a complimenting rug for as well, I would consider changing out the red accent color for the perfect rugs. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! Happy Holidays!

grey and blue are complimented with gold/yellow tones. Consider a patterned rug with the complimentary colors to brighten your space: https://www.houzz.com/products/aaris-hand-hooked-area-rug-green-sunflower-76x96-prvw-vr~32057370

Thanks! I love the pattern of the rug you suggested. I would definitely have to eliminate the red accents due to the yellow. I would love to find coordinating rugs for both areas, but need round for kitchen.

    Rug Suggestions from BoConcept:

Kitchen- Dimas Rug has a nice flat surface allowing easier sliding of chairs and vacuuming.

Living- Neat Rug, the shag adds visual weight while a nice neutral grey isn't overpowering.

In all honesty I don't think the patterned gray chair, since it is subdued in color, is really a problem at all with this rug. I think it adds interest to the living room.

Thanks for the suggestions! I would keep the current red rug, but since my floors, cabinets and ottoman are so dark, I thought I would go lighter in the living room. I also need to go for a larger round rug as many have suggested. The following rugs are light and muted, but I worry about the pattern. Thoughts?

Elaine...anyway we could get a picture of the living room that is further back so we can get a sense of the entire space?

Never-mind...I popped over to your other thread on the subject and found some pictures. I have to say. That red rug you currently have is a show stopper. It is beautiful. Your home is lovely:)

I think this rug would give a lighter, warmer feeling. It's muted so it would look good there and you could keep the red pillows. Rug on sale today

Thanks so much for giving me a visual of the rugs! I do like the red rug but it seems to darker the space, especially with the charcoal ottoman. Here are a few more pics of the entire space, including the dining room off the kitchen. I do have blues throughout and like the pop of red in living room. Any other suggestions for rugs for kitchen and living? Geometric like console maybe? Also, what can I do with the wall above the couch? Seems a bit drab with the clock. I REALLY appreciate all the help with my space.

I would keep the red rug in the living room. The blue is pretty but seems too light against the ottoman, and frankly the room loses the drama and interest the red rug gives. Again, the patterned chair is not a problem. I think it actually adds interest.

Are you really certain that the dining area can't accommodate a rectangular rug? I assume you've measured carefully. Either way, I would choose a rug that has blues and reds in it to tie in with the kitchen and living room colors, and I would suggest something transitional, not modern as you have now, to tie in with the LR rug.

I hadn't noticed this before, but your lamps are so short that they look more like bedroom lamps, although they're very nice. Something taller would give more impact against that wall. Over the couch I would suggest a very large painting or you could do a gallery wall. Something abstract with lots of different colors, perhaps incorporating some gray and red, would look wonderful and make your room come alive.

This is one of my gallery walls just to give you an idea, although the look is much more traditional than what you would want.

Ingrid, thanks for your advice! I think what also bothers me about the red rug is it has a lot of white in it and that seems to fight with the chair. I may revisit the rug later. I don't have the space for a rectangle rug in the kitchen. The perfect size would be 7ft so it would not interfere with the bar stools. I've not been able to find one with blue, red and gray. As for the wall above the couch, I really like your art wall. I will think about doing that or a large picture. My current lamps don't really pop and I may move them to the bedroom and search for something larger as you suggested. All great ideas! Many thanks!

Kjoy1, thanks so much for the great art ideas! I love the 6 picture idea! Where did you find those? I also thought about keeping the clock and placing something around it, or using a large mirror and art.

If I keep the red rug in the living room, any suggestions for a round rug for under my blue kitchen table that will coordinate? Thanks!

Where did you get your red rug from? Do they have a round as well?

I actually bought it from Amazon. They do not have a round, which is what I would like to stay with. The rug is pretty cheap looking and flimsy in person which is part of what bothers me. Any suggestions on the round or replacing both? Thanks so much for your help!!! Means a lot

Does anyone like the following rug as suggested by a contributor? I really like the warmth but may muddy my sofa a bit. Thanks!

Viscose is not a good material for an area rug. Don't fall for a viscose rug as it will turn yellow if it gets wet and it is hard to clean.

Thanks, Shelende! I never knew that so I'm glad you told me. I'm pulling at straws trying to find the right pattern, color, material and size rugs for under table and living area. Any rug suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!!

While pretty...I am not a fan of the taupe rug in your room

Thanks, Kjoy1! I don't like it either. You have been so helpful. Do you have any suggestions for living and dining rugs or a round rug to coordinate with the red in living? I really appreciate you!!

This one has potential but I like the touches of blue that your gray one offered...
