Hey Friends...

I need help with my bonus room. It is the room that is a hodge podge and i want to purchase some furniture/change paint color and lighting. this room is a 12x21 and really has no function whatsoever. I would like to create a teen/kids space along with room for a 7ft air hockey table. the treadmill/furniture and desk can go so Im open for any ideas...I have no decorating ability so a sketch or pics will help tremendously. Thanks!

Here are some pics of my current situation! Sorry- i know its a mess...

this is a spot that despite its size you will need furniture that gives ultimate use while using little space and very multifunctional. So you should definitely need a good size coffee table to place things on and in. some suggestions.

are you planning for slumber parties? furniture would change some.

I would recommend further defining the room's needs/functions before designing a floor plan and then you can shop for items---beyond 7 ft air hockey table, what else? Tv? lounge sofa? game table? fridge? storage? etc....

Yes I plan to have tv still since teen is s boy who loves his video games. Want somewhere for teens to hang out. Would like to paint a neutral color and add a sectional sofa. Entry is small and I can’t get a traditional size couch through doorway. Thanks for your input.

Here is 12x21 layed out w/7ft air hockey. I would position the hockey table lengthwise in your room for most head room at each end.

I placed two trundle beds in your room for hanging out; couldn't fit a sectional in your space w/ length required by hockey table. Trundle gives you a nice option for overnight stays/sleep overs etc and you can find some cool leather ones for durability/ use large pillow for lounging. Small square ottomans are useful for extra seating/putting up feet etc. I'll play around later and see if sectional can fit if move TV. Included bookcase behind floating trundle for storage.

I would paint walls and ceiling same, lighter tones- and perhaps one shade darker on window wall to draw eye into room and maximize visual space.

It's tight to try to get a sectional in this space with an air hockey table. Consider your need 3 ft each end of your air hockey table for players to use--so positioning length of room needed.

I think you will need to keep your TV at end wall where it is due to angled walls on sides.

    Here is sectional option:

Thank you for your advice...we bought hockey table for kids Xmas but did not give to them since I bought without planning. Husband says it will take up too much room.

We've had hockey tables too, from experience, ping pong has always been enjoyed and had the most use of any table, but that takes up even more room---but so worthwhile having something kids can burn some energy off with and offer an alternative to screen time. Perhaps a poker or game table w/four chairs?

Consider a Sactional...comfy & well made, comes apart. You can make a standard sofa and get two ottomans which would give you versatile seating/lounging options

I think I would flip the arrangement. Put the couch at end near window bump out with room for a narrow table or shelf under window for storage, lamp, clock etc.

Next to couch on other side a mini fridge and a side table/dresser for storage/snacks etc... and a place to set things while playing air hockey. I hope the air hockey table is a small one because a full size one will be a bit too large for this space. A couple of small stools and a small bistro table next to the table gives a place for spectators.

Paint the whole room 1 color, like a nice creamy white

Consider lighting and maybe add a rope light to the window bump out to give some ambiance lighting while playing video games.

Consider wall sticker art, removable and fun to add some color and whimsy.

Each piece of the Tetris pack is a separate sticker and you can configure in any way

Great ideas, thank you. Yes the hockey table is 7ft! We have not opened it yet but room is slated for a redo so I was hoping we could make it work- room dimensions are 12 x 21.

Also we do have smaller children so is there another color u might would recommend besides cream? Cody I get away with a light taupe or gray?

With your dimensions, you would need the hockey table going longways. That doesn't leave a lot of room. Bean bags and bean chairs are pretty cool for watching tv. I thought real gamers like those special chairs.

Thanks guys! Hockey able is 4’ x 7’. I would say my son is not a real gamer...he will sit in whatever i put up there for him to sit on. I’m trying to make it a family/teen hangout.

@ Rawket Grl -Thank you for your time and suggestion! How did u make the layout you used? This is my first time posting for help on houzz. Thanks!

So I'm not clear on the space for a hockey table. I've seen some pretty radical players. How much clearance do you need on the sides?

@suzyq53- ? I’m still trying to figure that out myself... can’t imagine more than 2 ft all around?

So maybe it can go across. If you put it at the back, you could fit a L-sectional with a small return at the front for gaming and tv in the current location. Instead of an ottoman or table, those tuckunder snack trays could be moved around.

    Thanks

Rawket Girl has the right idea, except that the hockey table can go closer to the wall since you only need room on the ends, not on the sides.

If a sectional or sofa doesn't fit, use futons, or some combo of bean bag chairs. It's great to get the kids off the sofas and screens, and playing air hockey. Ours has gotten a lot of use.

For now, just move everything out of the room that won't be staying. Move the air hockey table into the room, and the TV on the same wall. Move the existing chair and footstool to near the TV, and add a couple of bean bag chairs or a futon. Big floor pillows are also popular for the teen crowd, or just a rug. At some point, a small refrigerator and microwave might be good.

I wouldn't paint. The bright color is fun for a teen/family game room. Maybe add a few posters on the wall, something that your son enjoys. Bonus if the poster, rug or beanbag chairs have some red in them too.

An air hockey table does not need any clearance on one long side. It might need clearance on one side depending where the return is. The ends however require room for play, you can get away with 2 feet with smaller people, but adults will probably appreciate 3 feet of room for play. Table needs to be lengthwise in room for play area also for head room.

@partim- I just feel like the red walls make it feel so much smaller?? But I also have no sense of design

The room is the size it is. I see from your idea books that you are thinking of a lighter airy look, but for a teen hangout they may feel more like it is "theirs" if it is a little more edgy and less pretty.

Very true...I hadn’t thought of it that way. Thanks for putting a different spin on it.

I'm just going by a bit of what you said earlier, but kids love a place where a bit of dripped pizza sauce isn't a disaster. So no pale gray sofas.

Your son isn't likely to co-design it with you, but a few posters of his favorite movie/games/athletes/musicians will make him more likely to invite friends over. My experience was that although having a bunch of my sons' friends over was often messy and noisy, it was great for our home to be one of the friendly hangout places.

Yes! Looking at a customizable sectional in deep charcoal grey. Just trying to decide whether to keep air hockey table or take it back?? Definitely would like our house to be one of the places the kids want to be as he gets older. Our son actually does not really care abt colors, design etc... one reason the BR looks like it does!!

I can only give you our experience, but table games like this are fun and do get used. It's nice to get the kids (and adults) off the sofa for awhile. FYI we also use ours as a crafts/utility table because, unlike our smaller foosball table, it has a smooth top. We have a large plastic-coated tablecloth that goes over it, and messy projects are completed there. We add a board on top so we can remove the half-completed project to play air hockey.
