How warm must it be to do outside repotting?

I need to pot up some new plantlets as well as some plants never out of their original pots. Cause of the mess, repotting is always done on my outside patio table. This may be a silly question...at 50 degrees it's a little cool for me but tolerable, so is it too cold to work on the violets outside? Expecting a warm up to mid-70s next week but I have the available time right now.

It seems a little bit uncomfortable for the grower.... And they grower should be a happy camper when he or she handles the plants... gives them good energy. Shivering grower handling tender plantlets...

Back to basement ... I have my potting station there...can leave a mess and come back next day...

I am having a serious potting jones today but don't want to take it out on the tender little ones. Today I shall kick the cat instead. Next week I pot.

I do not believe you are going to kick the cat. But I think if you have everything ready - you can repot the old ones - one at a time. Fix one, take it home, eat a little slice of chocolate, warm up - take another one out.

Awwwww come on,,,,,,,what is a little mess when you are having fun????

I have a friend and once a year she and I go on a "potting" marathon. We cover the kitchen table and we empty, fill, divide, repot, topdress and whatever else needs to be done to whichever violet/gesneriad needs it.

We try to be careful but hey,,,,,that is what a dustpan and broom are for! If we make a mess, we both help clean it up! We would rather be warm and sweep a little, than cold and not have to clean a mess!

This is not to say we don't have to do it at any other time. Just cover the table, pour a cup of whatever and go for it!!!!

Please don't hurt the cat. Rosie

Rosie, if I make my mess indoors can I still have my chocolate and eat it, too?

Of course you can!!! Would not have it any other way! Rosie

H, and i All, I believe Violet you live in Jamaica. Weather conditions in Jamaica are much different from say, Erie, Penn,. where they have received many feet of snow since Christmas Day. Jamaica may have snow on some of the mountains and none on the land lower down. Please confirm if I am right.

    OMG

I'm suddenly humming Harry's Jamaica Farewell song. And now Banana Boat Song. I can't get them out of my head. How'd you do that?

You are very close Yolanda. It's south, it's at sea level, it's somewhat sandy. If I close my eyes and turn my head just so, it's Jamaica! :-) Thank you for taking me away on such a cold, rainy, dreary day like we're having here today. I hope everyone is keeping safe and warm especially my violet friends in the N.E. this week.

    :D

I misread this part of Rosie's post the first time, and had to chuckle at my mistake.

"I have a friend and once a year she and I go on a "potting" marathon. We cover the kitchen table and we empty, fill, divide, repot, topdress and whatever else needs to be done to whichever violet/gesneriad needs it. "

Anyone care to guess what I thought that bold word was? heh

Ummm, I don't get it. Topdress is when you gently scrap out the top layer of soil and add fresh so you don't have to do a total repotting of the plant.

I just googled the word and sometimes it is hyphenated and sometimes not. But the definition is the same. What am I missing???? Rosie

No, no, Rosie. There was NOTHING wrong with your use of the word "topdress", m'dear. But in my hast, I misread what you had typed. I read it as "... we empty, fill, divide, repot topless and ..." Had me thinking that's one way to keep clothes from getting dirty. LOL
