Just purchased a gray sectional and want to paint. Thinking fog gray throughout or should I use a darker accent wall. Wall goes throughout the kitchen so any advice? Or am I way off on gray walls??

Hi, I'm afraid gray doesn't become the rest of your house well. Now everything fits in the brown and beige colorscheme. Bringing in a gray sectional asks for one of the following things:

    1) Overhaul a lot more than just the walls. For instance: your fireplace might all of a sudden to not seem to fit in anymore, nor the brown window coverings. You might even start to wonder if you should paint the kitchen cabinets.

    2) You only paint the walls, but are never able to detect what's off, so you keep on bying new furniture or just give up and wonder what happened.

    3) You return the gray sectional and instead go for a beige or brown or forest green one. Maybe even a bright blue or a vivid terracotta red or terracotta orange. For all those colors do fit in.

To me bringing in gray here is as much off as would be pink. Too cool, too harsch, too different.

Could we see a picture of the sectional? There are a zillion grays. Some can be made to work with warm colours, some can't.

To me the major thing you will have to deal with is that overwhelmingly large brown ... door? I think you must include that in your overall plans.

The sectional not delivered yet but this is a picture. Also the brown window blind I was going to get in a different color or put a curtain there. It’s a sliding glass door. I’m open to ideas there too! Lol

Hold off on that purchase until you have a plan. Looks like you haven't measured the room either. That sectional will kill your space.

I appreciate your comments but I’m totally confused now. I guess what I was trying to do was get some color in the rooms and my new obsession is navy so I thought gray. I am stumped on what wall color to put with the oak cabinets and painting them is not an option. I’m starting over if anyone has ideas. Thanks in advance!

If I go with cream walls, cream sofa, is it weird to paint one small navy accent wall?

Yes, it's weird. "Accent walls" are for people who are afraid of paint. Don't be afraid of paint. Paint is your friend. And it's a really easy friend to change.

M&M's idea is a good one. If it were me, I would paint the walls navy and go with cream furniture. Or light gray. Or white. Basically, whatever I really loved. Of course, right now, as I sit in my living room, the walls are white and the sofa is blue, so what does that tell you?

Definitely ditch the brown blinds. They are making my eyes bleed. Figuratively.

Then, instead of sitting here and speculating about what would look good, get online and find some rooms you really love the design of. Then literally mimic those. Let someone else do your legwork.

Here is some inspiration for navy-loving folks:

Here's cream and navy like M&M was suggesting:

And here's cream and navy like I would do:

To help tie in your warm-toned brown finishes throughout your spaces, the recommendation would be to choose more of a greige or taupe. Felted Wool by Sherwin Williams is a nice warm-toned gray. It looks like the saturation point of this color it may be too close to that of your new sectional so to avoid a washed-out look, consider a much darker warm gray or much lighter warm gray to accent the wall behind the sectional.

Best of luck with your project!

I'm so glad you are planning to deal with that very brown blind. Brava. I like the idea of thinking cream and navy. The sectional you post is a good one, in a good colour, but it is very big indeed and I don't think it wants to play with navy. Really I don't. Even if it does fit in your room which I find impossible to have an opinion on.

If you're still fearful of an entire navy room, you can do it on the FP wall, and do it first. If you love it, then consider painting navy on the other walls. I think you'll be happier with a 3-seat sofa and 2 chairs as your basic seating pieces. That's much more flexible for arranging and re-arranging.

Ignore the big brown blind! If I did navy on fireplace wall, where would I stop it since it goes into the kitchen?

You don't have a wall you can use as an accent. Keep it all one color.
