need remodel help for mud room/ laundry room

I’m looking to make our back entry way more inviting, which serves as our laundry room and where we keep our shoes / supplies. This is our main exit so we use this room every day to enter and leave.

I would like to add a bench with storage under the bench (for shoes). Thinking this would go right next to my stackable washer and dryer. I’m also thinking of putting a small wall between the washer and dryer and where the bench would go and then storage above the washer and dryer and sitting bench area. If possible we would like to put in some counter top somewhere so we can fold laundry. Please let me known if I’m thinking of this right or what suggestions you all might have.

Here are some lovely entryway/laundry rooms that pop up when you do a search on Houzz.

--Consider building a simple closet to enclose the water heater and give you a place to hang coats and kick off shoes by the entry door. You could even just enclose the space with beautiful drapes or shower curtain.

--Put a counter to the right of the washing machine for sorting with curtain rod and lovely fabric below.

--Find a matching over-the-fridge cabinet at a big box store to put over the washing machine for detergent, bleach, etc.

--Get an indoor outdoor runner or area rug in grays, blue, and white.

--Add some art work to the space.

Just went through this same project recently. The main idea was to have a defined place for everything, and to "hide" as much as possible. A closet, bench and shoe storage are key. Would you consider a tankless water heater to free up more space? Another consideration is unstacking the w/d - a countertop could be placed directly above, with some shelves and hanging space over the counter.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the advice. I am currently getting quotes on a tankless water heater. Mine is a 18 years old gas system. If I can create enough space for a countertop or bench that really adds value to the room and justifies the extra cost, I will upgrade. Otherwise, enclosing a new traditional water heater is also a possibility, since I’ll likely replace this one very soon.

I was thinking of stacking the washer and dryer so we could have a bench to sit on to tie our shoes or wait on. However, I believe my dryer duct and electrical cord for the washer could reach it I did side-by-side. I like the look of a side-by-side with a counter over the washer and dryer, and perhaps if I upgrade to a tankless system, do a corner bench where the current traditional water tank is?

We also have that big white cabinet next to the stairs to go into the kitchen which we could do something with. That is poorly put together and needs to be fixed.

I would draw up an exact measurement floor plan with doors and windows. Then see if your wish list will fit. When I draw up floor plans, I cut out paper doll items to represent w/d, sink, cabinets, etc. Another thing you might want is a clothes rod to hang dry items.
