Many people would put the TV Screen. I would prefer a nice paint or some objects that you like: Picture, candlestick

I would put a mirror if it would reflect a nice view.. It would give more space and light.

Grey is the popular color now. But many variations. From modern to french gray. I had a very tall mirror above my white mantel. - to the ceiling. The room looked larger and ceiling higher.

I would suggest some nick-nacks, a mirror, pic of the family, painting, or a nice medal piece of artwork.

I like what judyg is telling you about woodwork -- in addition to its' framing potential, an expanse of white will keep that corner from looking pinched and make. a better backdrop for artwork. Think your upper moldings should be painted, as well.

A large beautiful painting would be ideal - but if you can't find a painting that is truly beautiful /tasteful or that you really, really love, then choose a large gorgeous framed mirror - and you can't go wrong with that! But for goodness sake, please do not select an ugly painting that just happens to be the right size - or it will make your home and other furnshishings look cheap.

your fireplace will be the focal point to the room and you won't need to go to the expense of wider trim at the ceiling. Once you have anchored a huge piece of art canvas or large oversized mirror with a wide frame you won't see anything else. The mantel could still hold candles etc. This is a favorite canvas of mine from art.com
