IMO it depends on many things like the height of the ceiling the style of light sometimes the rules are broken because it just works. Post your space and the light you are thinking about and you might get more help.

Fifty percent of the length of the table if you are talking about a linear style fixture .....when no leaves are in place if that is most of the time

If you are talking about the height of the fixture, that depends your ceiling height, and the mass /open/closed/style of the light itself

I'm sorry, Jan. I guess I didn't make myself clear. I thought I described potential table as being 6-7 ft long, and that the chandelier I have is a rectangular cage type. Again, I guess I wasn't clear. Thank you for your input.
