VdB is better for a bushy fig. Panache is much more vigorous. If they let a tree grow large it will have corresponding roots. If you keep the plant as a bush the roots will correspond to that. If you are okay with pruning every year just keep it small. Your not going to get the figs at the top of a 20' tree anyway. Keep everything thing reach of your hands 8ft, or go 10ft and use a step ladder.

Melikeeatplants, what about Strawberry Verte (aka green ischia possibly), are you aware of that type, how vigorous/big does that bush get?
