Help with Backsplash Installation Dilemma

last modified: 8 years ago

Looking for suggestions with the Back splash installation in our Kitchen. Its a town home kitchen and the builder has added about 4 inch Granite as Back splash and covered the Full Back splash on top of the Counter top. Now planning to add a ceramic Lantern tile Back splash( https://www.homedepot.com/p/Splashback-Tile-Vintage-Florid-Lantern-White-6-1-4-in-x-7-1-4-in-x-8-mm-Ceramic-Wall-Mosaic-Tile-5-Tiles-Per-Unit-VINTAGEFLORIDLANLTWHT/206496939). But wondering if we should remove the existing 4 inch and the slab on top of Counter top( Debating to leave it as is because its easier for cleaning and we are also trying to limit the budget).

Any feedback is appreciated.Please suggest.

Attached are couple of old pictures of the kitchen before we moved in.

At the very least remove the 4" granite backsplash. Up to you if you want to leave the granite behind the stove or remove it and have a continuous look for the lantern tile. It is your preference. Remember to purchase a trim for the ends of the backsplash.

100% remove the 4-inch granite piece. The tile you picked out looks like it would be a pain to clean so maybe keep the granite behind the stove, but up to you.

Thanks, both of you. Do you think leaving the granite slab would create a confused look? Want to keep it for easy cleaning purposes but still debating. Also, if we go with the mentioned tile, planning to add a darker color grout(again for easy cleaning and staining purposes). Any suggestions. Greatly appreciate your responses.

Keeping the slab might break up the flow of the tile, which can be jarring, but not always. Honestly the only way to tell is to get some samples and do a mock up, or photoshop it in.

Don't do a dark grout with that tile, it will be SO BUSY. A slight contrast should be fine, but your stone is already busy so keep everything else simple which is why I'm already hesitant about that tile choice.

Do you think that will go with our White Cabinets? Picked the lantern tiles as we were opting for a more vintage traditional look.

In the kitchen .....I think function should come first....and the narrow matching backsplash will always to be the easiest to keep clean...

It would be a shame to have that really cool tile broken up by the granite... I would pull it all the short and the high piece ( have it cut into a small table top or something )... The tile is beautiful...

I would do a grout color that matches something i your granite color so it ties it all together. As far as cleaning goes - I have just painted walls in my kitchen - not even the short backsplash and have no issues cleaning it.

As to adding an additional backsplash above the stone ......for function it is not necessary.....a good paint that is washable is cheaper and less defining.....the area above the stone backsplash can be creatively enhanced with small art and decor pieces that can be easily changed for a fresh new look from time to time.....to finish it off a little more ....a quarter round border tile could be added ...

Thank You Filipe for all the detailed info. Greatly appreciate it. I liked the lighter grout as it looks more subtle. Will go with it.

Thank You Debbie. We are planning to limit the budget and so were thinking if we should leave it as is( Also, right now it is very easy to clean, so wanted to see if we can keep it like that. Any suggestions? Like your idea to match the grout with granite color. Will try to pick a light color grout which matches one of the light colors in he graninte.

Thank You ritasj. Apart from the function, we are also looking to add some character to the kitchen and so were checking the lantern designs with the vintage feel. I like your idea of the small art and the decor pieces. Can you please provide more info on that

I can't imagine it would cost much to remove it.... you could probably do it yourself. The question really needs to be - Will you be happy with your decision for a long time to come?? If you change your mind later and try to remove it, you will find it difficult if not impossible to not damage tile and then to piece tile in. Of course there is the added square footage of tile you have to purchase....

It's almost tax season! Maybe you can use some bucks from your return???

Just be 100% confident in your decision - and it will be fine...

Ha ha..I like your way of thinking. Still thinking about it and the major concern is also cleaning above the countertop. Thank You though. :)

I agree with most....remove the granite backsplash. That tile you picked is gorgeous and you want that to be the focal point. I also agree with the grout matching something in the granite. White on white on white with beige granite won't be as appealing as a colored grout. Good luck with your project!!!!

Divya...the idea for art or decor above the stone backsplash is like a little miniature art gallery....in an open floor plan situation it is less “kitchen-y” when viewed from the living areas....you can use tiny oil paintings....a collection of antique plates or small metal sculptures.....photo art....whatever represents your taste......before you add these pieces .....place your countertop appliances ...canisters etc....and then add the art pieces in the bare spots.....the traditional themes are more food or wine oriented....and in your case maybe more “country”....to make it more personal.... a few trips to antique or thrift stores will turn up lots of “tiny” ideas....if you have room for under cabinet lighting you can feature the area (with a dimmer switch which can make a perfect night light as well)

I would leave it as is. Your counter tops are busy and by the time you add hardware and have your stove etc. in it will look great.
You can always change your mind when you have lived with if for a while .

REMOVE IT for sure. and do NOT have your tile back splash fight for attention with the counter top. For example. the multi colored fiddle stick tiles that are so popular today. Look at any picture on line of this example and you will see just how MOSTLY that mistake is made time and again. plain white tile in an interesting pattern is far more suitable, long lasting and does not make one focus on something that does not deserve all of your attention.

By the way. Make sure that you have a great installer of the tile. Too expensive to mess up if the care of installation is more about the cost and not the finished product. Hence, making sure that the level and plumb aspect of the installation is perfect otherwise the tile will enhance the errors. And CERTAINLY if you choose colored tile grout.

Thanks Rick. We have decided to remove the granite like everyone suggested and going with a professional.

    Thanks all for the input.
