I'm with janny--the floors are already bold. Pale on the walls is best. And blue and orange are complimentary so it would look great!

Blue is the complement to orange so any blue will make it oranger and brighter. I would do a color that is a very grayed shade of that orange...tan.....look at paint wheel and step back to an orange based tan in a medium value. That will soften. Use blues as accents....very shade of blue on furniture, rugs, etc with some greenery and even a few shades of purple blue.

Is the photo you posted the actual room or an example? I like the photo myself - especially the stripes in the back room.

yes, those are the actual rooms and colors. The owners had 2 little boys; we have a one yr old girl. I thought the blue walls, orange floors made it feel a little more boyish. We just don't have the desire/energy to strip the floors back to their natural state right now.

The blue actually makes the orange look bolder. I prefer the softer grays or beige/tan

furniture, rugs etc are previous owners.

Paint the family room part ( now has stripes ) Porter Earl Grey 522-5 and the play area Porter Lilac Sachet #246-4. Ceiling and trim white in both rooms. Remember that purple and blue are complimentary to orange on the color wheel, so a violet based blue will live well with the orange. The existing blue it too weak for the bold floor and from the wrong side of the color spectrum. I think the ceiling is too low to have the bold horizontal stripes, they only make the room seem shorter. The floor is the focal point so we can not ignore it, you just need to enhance it. The walls need to tone it down by being a sophisticated greyed down version of purple and taupe. Use neutral colored upholstery with bold accent pillows in the family room around the area rug.

I am going to scroll back and say that I also like a pale warm gray, pale taupe, or a pale grayed version of the orange (very light rusty brown) like debraha said , in addition to the pale aqua. Get some color samples and see how they change in your light conditions. I painted our basement taupe (C2 Shaker Beige) but in one area - a lit inset of shelves - the light always make it look gray. Luckily for me, that was a happy accident. It is when you get everything else in - rugs, etc., that what might seem too bright at first can be balanced or anchored and can work. In our taupe-painted basement with light grey brown floorsI have added turquoise, greyed orange, grey and white.

The floors are fantastic for a playroom. I like the current colors, or as others have said, stay with soft, light and neutral walls.

if you are getting a lot of light in the room ,you could consider a navy or Royal blue ,a grey is already on there ,but you could go a few shades darker .

I would do antique white and add bright color wall treatments! You could buy canvas and let the kids paint them! Or you could do Sherman Williams Electric Lime; it is a great color of green!

My new favorite color scheme is pink & orange! This requires a neutral wall color but adding patterns w pink & orange or pink & gray looks fantastic. Bold but beautiful. Consider a natural jute area rug for texture.

With the orange floor, you have all the color that you need. Another deep color on the walls would make your space trendy but you would soon tire of it. You'll probably be adding artwork and other flashes of color when you decorate so it's best to paint the walls a neutral...pale beige, cream or a warm white or (very) pale and warm gray. Think about what you will use in the adjoining room. If the sofa stays, use that mocha as an accent, if you think you need one. A colored trim tends to enclose an area. Paint trim the same color as the walls or a shade deeper if you want a spacious, uncluttered look.Looks like a great area for kids and adults alike. Good luck!

I will suggest yellow but it might look a bit bright but I will say shades of white and blue will do good.

has anyone worked with chalkboard paint? I was thinking of painting one section of the interior wall with it.

Leave them the blue as it matches the stripe in the adjoining room and paint circles like this room or purchase stencils…use lots of pinks, magentas, tourquoise, etc. And a white shag rug from IKEA.

Chalkboard is great for a small section. Kids write & draw in a smaller reference point. Section of an area that is rectangular and tall so it's still fun when they're older. You can leave them messages also, like Mommy loves you, or please pack toys away. :)

Orange floors are very Strong. To soften the look paint the walls a white or cream. To compliment the room use Orange and Aqua accents to complete the space.
