I don't think the space is large enough for a "functional" piece of furniture, but I think if you put in a corner bookshelf to add some decorative items like frames, candles, flowers, etc. it will fill out the space nicely without being too cluttered.

You have many options, but it doesn't seem like you have enough space for an elaborate piece of furniture. The most important thing to take into consideration is not to make the room it look cluttered.

The safer bet is a side table. It would really help us to have a picture of the whole room so we can understand your style and preferences, but you can't go wrong with a [classic, timeless design[(https://www.houzz.com/products/lahaina-side-table-stainless-steel-prvw-vr~46005561).

Or suggestion is to go for a lamp, something simple and classic that can add character to the room and make a statement as a piece of furniture without taking to much space. [The Arco Floor Lamp[(https://www.houzz.com/products/arco-style-floor-lamp-black-marble-base-prvw-vr~10202285) is a great example, it would work in any room and especially yours!

I'd do a decorative floor lamp.

It would look nice whether on or off, and wouldn't crowd the walkway over there.

I would add a snack plant in a mid century modern pot....next to fireplace and add stacked art on the small wall to the right going into the dining room..Love this printable art on Etsy.com so mNy designs and color to pick from.....you print size you want and frame them yourself..super budget friendly.

Thank you. Like the plant idea and particularly that plant stand. A piece of art/sculpture in itself. And thank you for the artwork links as well! Both ideas more affordable at this stage of our lives too.

I have this very affordable ($29.95) plant stand from IKEA. It's tall enough that with plants it stands almost 4 1/2 feet high. They have great planter prices as well. Mine has a snake plant, a peace lily and currently my poinsettia from Christmas. Usually, I have a bird sculpture on the middle height shelf just for a change from all plants.

I would probably put a faux tree there and a hang a piece of art on the wall.

No faux trees or plants pretty please;)
