Kitchen help: oven placement

last modified: 8 years ago

This is a 100 yr old home so .... quirks. The stove is next to a window (mud room) and needs some ventilation, most likely recirculating hood that won’t vent outdoors ... my question, do we move the oven over a bit and install a filler cabinet next to the window? Or will that make the countertops too choppy? The concern is having a hood that sticks out past the window (was thinking about a basic fan with a box of some sort built around it). We’re doing kitchen refresh so getting new cabinets, sink/faucet, and countertops and an open shelf on this wall ... or, any other ideas?

I've seen it discussed on several threads about the "legalities/code violations" of having a gas stove near a window.

You can replace that double sink with a smaller single. You have a dishwasher so the reason for a double isn't present. A single will be larger than either of the sinks that make up the double. This would give you room for a filler at the end. 18" wide would be about the smallest. It's 21" front to back so actually pretty large.

Ouch. If that's all the room you've got, wait until you can afford to tear out some walls and put in a real kitchen.

is this the only wall in the kitchen?

it would be helpful to see the rest of the room with a few other photos.

    sorry, pic is distorted @oliviag55

This is another wall ... this is just to the right of the sink wall ... and oddly enough (remember it’s a 100 yr old home) there’s a separate butlers pantry where the fridge is (pics below). The blue room is back wall of main kitchen. Yellow fridge room is a separate butlers pantry

I just want to say that I love your old cabinets on the long wall. Mine are very similar, but without the fancy trim.

I agree with the advice to put in a smaller sink, and to put a cabinet between the range and window wall. You can have a cutting board made to fit the sink cut-out, which will provide temporary counter space.

Have you considered moving the stainless steel table parallel to the sink/range, for use as prep space, then using an all-fridge column between the doors, where the table is now against the wall? You could keep the current fridge in the pantry as back-up, but the most often used refrigerated items would be more convenient to the prep/cooking spaces. The back-up fridge could be used to store grains, flours, pasta, dried beans, etc. Is there 30" available on that wall, without covering the switch?

Thanks! People keep telling me to replace that old wall of cabinets but then there’s nothing original left in the kitchen (except the floors). I love em so they’re staying.

Good idea on the column fridge ... I’ve never seen them in person but will check them out. I was also thinking about a slim freestanding pantry in that spot, too.

I’ve tried the ss table as you suggest but it’s a tad too long ... gets in the way of mudroom door clearance and the walkway from butlers pantry.

One thought: i’m considering pulling the dishwasher out of the wall cabinet and putting it into a compact island to run parallel to the sink, which would free up some space to adjust sink and range a bit more ... I imagine I’d have to go custom for that or find local carpenter, so that it fits the space just right ... lots of doorways and pathways in and out of this kitchen ...

at this point I’m wondering if it’s worth going custom for this wall of cabinets since they’re just the lower cabinets, so that it all fits just right ... my total budget in here is 15k.

FWIW, I'd keep the DW beside the sink, and have a custom prep island/work table made to fit the space. Do you bake a lot? Maybe a marble-topped table for rolling pastry and bread dough.

Happy to hear you are keeping the original cabinets. Are they shallower than standard? Mine started out 16" deep, but I modified some of them to 23" deep with 24" counter. I also love the glass upper cabinets with the jars and white ceramics. Total charm!

You might post in the Kitchens forum for more ideas.
