kitten/cat food opinions

Please help settle an difference of opinions, my friends husband TNR ferals in their neighborhood, some times he's surprised when he traps one pregnant, as the kittens get older he starts them off on cat chow, I try to tell them that its wrong and they need kitten food for various reasons, soooo who's right/wrong. I will have them read this so I appreciate all your thoughts. Thank you !!!

You're right. Kittens need food specific to their growing needs. Kitten food has nutrients tjat are required for growth that adult food doesn't provide. You wouldn't feed a human baby adult food as it's not fortified with the nutrition that babies require.

Have him Google "kitten food vs adult food." I just did, and saw pages and pages of articles on this. Not one said its okay to feed a kitten grown cat food.

Or give him the phone number to a couple of veterinarian offices and have him call and ask. They'll all give him the same answer.

sephia_wa Thank You, what are the long term affects on the kitten as it grows? My thinking is that they will always be smaller and not as healthy? I dont know why I never asked my vets, I'll chalk it up to senior moments LOL

If he just has a large colony of TNR feral cats, how is he going to feed one cat one thing and another cat something else? You would just have to put out a dish and cats will come and go to the feeding bowl.

They are feral cats. Don't worry about it. Also, what Arkansas said. Are you going to label one bowl: "Kittens ONLY?"

You're right. Each animal needs specific food while growing. Animals are pretty similar to kids. Also, don't forget about each food's ingredients and choose a good quality one to prevent problems that may appear.
