27 inch stackable washer/dryer with a 30 inch door?

Anyone have a 27 inch stackable washer/dryer in a laundry closet with a 30 inch door? Do you need to take the door off the hinge if you need to take the unit out?

Do you have a tape measure? Measure the opening.

We're currently just in studs - but the architect says that we *may* have difficulty with a 27 inch stackable.

Yeah, you might, probably, its not to tough however.

talk to me when you have to get your appliances down a 24"-wide staircase to the basement! ;) I wouldn't worry about taking the door off, as that's an easy process, and you hope to rarely or never take them out anyway.

That's the best that your "architect" could do? You "may" have difficulty.

If it is a 30" door panel then take off the door thickness (usually around 1.375 to 1.625 inches for standard Home Depot type doors) then take off the hinge throw of a standard hinge - about 1/2" - and you end up with 30" less approximately 2" = 28" . If your washing units are exactly 27" then it should go in with door on the hinges.

That said... taking an interior door off the hinges is a pretty easy task.

These terrible basements are all over South Philadelphia. Sometimes there are cellar doors, which save you, but not in the really older working-class neighborhoods. Luckily, I'm mostly working with a contractor who used to service appliances, so he (cover your ears) takes them apart and reassembles them in the basement. If you catch the intermediate state, it's quite a sight!!

I have a 24 inch washer in a 25 inch closet with a door that has a top and bottom pin hinge. Imagine two pins one straight up and one straight down. I have had the washer or dryer serviced several times for a variety of issues and the door comes off and the machines are removed. But since you are building I would steal a few inches from either side. Sometimes architects don't really understand real world issues. The service companies often charge you more to service machines that are stacked and some warranties require certain clearances and you void your warranty if the walls are too close.

Remove the door to the laundry at install, and remove THE DOOR TO THE MACHINE. when you push it in. A 27 inch machine is a 27 inch machine. It will go thru a 28 inch opening. With EASE.
