I would rearrange things and put the TV against that wall. Seems silly to have it in front of a window when there is an empty wall available.

NO to the shelf. It would not solve any problems.

The wall isn't ugly per se. The issue with this room is that there is no focal point, not enough of a conversation area, and not enough color/pattern/texture. It means the room feels unmoored and uncomfortable. The eye does not know where to rest.

Solution (assuming you can rotate the sectional to primarily face the wall that now has art):

1. Rotate sectional 90 deg, facing wall

2. Get long, low, sleek credenza for the wall (maybe 6 feet long, maybe 12" higher than the bench you're using now) and place TV on it

3. Find beautiful, non-neutral rug you lover to fill up the whole conversation area

4. Add colorful throw pillows to pick up rug colors

5. Remove the vintage sign and use elsewhere or resell. (It is nostalgic and charming but does not have enough going on artistically or visually to be a focal artwork)

6. Add tall plant (6') in corner between new TV location and window (real if you can, otherwise realistic faux)

A long shelf would look great, maybe someone can photoshop it for you. Various heights of black and white photos with some color mixed in too.

I agree with the others and rearrange your room a floating shelf sounds nice but we don’t see all angles of this room can you post more.

Instead of doing one long shelf, what about doing more than one and stacking or staggering them?

Yes, I'd rearrange the room so the sofa is floating and the tv in on the long wall. The fireplace is more of a room divider and attractive accent and less of a focal point in this room. It will feel much nicer that way. Can't tell what is on the other side of the front door, but it might be possible to put the sofa on the window wall and the tv on a wall we can't see.

a problem with a shelf as things are is it would make the room that much narrower. you'd have to move your sectional away from that wall or the shelf would loom over it.

I actually like the fireplace without a mantle. It has a sculptural feel. At what level would you place the shelf? Your TV, coffee table and sectional are right up against the wall so I don't see how it would fit. I like your arrangement as is. The place looks good and functional.

Every piece of hanging art is hung too high, including the starburst over the fireplace.

I don't think you need a mantel, and I agree that the fireplace isn't a natural focal point here, so it's ok to have the couch not face it -- it will still be what you see when you enter the room, and give a cozy feel to both LR and DR.

Also, yes, you've done a great job getting pieces that work nicely together and establishing a good overall feel. A couple of tweaks and it will all gel! :)

Not sure of the spacing but would your TV fit in the corner next to the fireplace where the tree is? Then you could place you sofa with it's back on the wall you dislike. I like the fireplace as is.

The first thing I thought of was the glare that might be on the TV if he placed it on the wall where the sign is, even though it seems the logical place to put it (tv).

What about placing your TV on an articulating arm to the left of the FP and your sofa on the long wall? I don't know if the chaise part of the sectional can change to the left rather than the right side, some of them do that. Natually the plant and art will have to be moved out that FP corner. I agree, your FP looks great without a mantel and has a sculptural look to it as houssaon said above, so I see why you want to use it as a focal point. I just think you need to move the TV closer to it so you can see them both.

If possible, put the tv on the right side of the window, and rotate your sectional so it's under the metal sign (which would make the art at almost the correct height).

Patrick, I'm glad you are proud of yourself as you should. You've done a fine job in your choices and colors and you've created a cozy "nook".

I quite like your room. Sure, the sectional is large, and you can try to switch things a bit-but it'd come with other sacrifices, as far as I can judge from the plan, so I'm not sure how much playing with a placement is worth it. Your fireplace is fab, I wouldn't even add a mantel. The room isn't big, I'm sure it plays a prominent role whether behind a couch or not.

The thing I'd try to understand better for you-is why you hate that wall. Can it be that your sign (which I like btw) is percieved by you as a compromise and a temporary thing, and you are waiting for a different art to become more significant to you? Can it be that you plainly need more storage for books(I can see you love them)-in which case I'd do something narrow, vertical,, maybe 3 or 4 shorter shelves closer to the TV, rather than going with one horizontal long piece? Maybe you're bothered with the fact the wall comes too close to the entrance(the black door is the entrance one, right?), and there's not enough feeling of transition, even though you grounded your sectional very nicely with that console? Maybe then a thought should be put into how to give that transitional feel, given the current furniture placement.

Analyze what's bothering you about the wall..share your thoughts with us if possible..it will become easier to see where the solution lies.

I like the way the sofa back makes the area behind it into an entryway.

Not sure a shelf is the answer to the wall issue.

Can you be on the lookout for 2 more smaller pieces to go on the wall with the metal sign? That way the sign can move off center a bit ( huge decorating responsibility for one piece to carry the whole wall). The center is the place for god.

Agree with those that suggest turning the sectional so it’s on the long wall and place the tv to the left of the fireplace. You may need a new tv stand but I think the room will function better that way.

The sign is cool, but it is too small for the wall and in comparison to your sofa. Paint the back of your door the same color as the wall and think of that whole wall as a continuum in which to place a proportionally size work of art (or another salvaged sign.) Can anyone photoshop in what I described so Patrick could see what that would look like.

I really like your current layout and think you've done a great job with this room. I especially dig the table behind the sofa. And I too think you do not need a mantle. Do you ever use your ceiling fan? If not, I'd replace it will a cool sculptural lighting fixture.

How about a gallery wall, but of course much less traditional than mine.

Wow, for a single guy the room is fantastic. Guys do tend to hang art too high, but then your eye level is considerably higher than us gals. Nice choices in furnishings and accessories. Maybe try swapping TV and plant? OR hang some curtains wider than the window so the TV does not overhang the window opening?

How about pulling your sofa a foot or so closer to the fireplace leaving just enough room to walk through and then putting your TV table in the corner left of the window on an angle? You could still view the TV and it would take up some of the space on that long wall, you could move the picture to the left. It would also give you a walkway between that long wall and the door.

My friend has this tv cabinet and has it place on an angle in a corner. Works out perfectly.

As far as the shelf question, no shelf and while I love the sign, I would put it in the kitchen/dinette area since it is food related and get something different for the living room. Just my opinion.
