Gray definitely is fading in terms of "trendy", but I don't think people will look at them and think they are "dated". If you're planning on selling anytime soon, I would recommend you consider something a little more timeless like white, but I don't think gray would be bad. It's all about the other elements too, not just the cabinet color.

Agree with ninigret. If you absolutely love grey and will stay in your house for a while go for it. If you are renovating with the plan to sell it soon go with white/cream as it seems to be the most popular now, as well as light colours will make the space feel larger, cleaner, and brighter. Belahn, I would love to see your purple island, one of my favorite colors. DH loves blue so the kitchen will end up in shades of blue. But that's okay, my purples and bright/hot pinks will come in somewhere else.

A purple island scares me but i appreciate the guts to do it. As for gray cabinets I agree with all the comments above. If you are not doing this with resale in the near future do what you love, the imaginary person who might buy the house 10 yrs from now is of no consquence. This is my red kitchen in my last house everyone said I would never sell because of it , it sold in 11 days for above asking and the kitchen is what sold the house. DO WHAT YOU LOVE

Agree with ninigret and Patricia above. Is this a new home you are having built now? Are you planning to sell it right away when it's finished or live there a while? I'm asking this because the time frame makes a difference. Neither the builder nor the Realtor is going to live there - unless s/he is your spouse :) Listening to others to gather ideas is wonderful, but always consider the source. IMO most builders are looking at doing the easy thing (for them). The easy thing is not necessarily the best thing or the right thing. Realtors have a tendency to advise what the market wants at that moment, which may or may not be the right thing either (for you).

My comment about Patricia's kitchen above: it is gorgeous. It is done with personality and style and that is why her home sold for more and sold quickly. It is rare to see a kitchen done with personality. So many kitchens are just rubber stamped versions of one another. If you decide you want to infuse your kitchen with personality and style, it too will reward you when you sell. JMO

Get what YOU want ... IF trends are important to you then yes, gray is definitely trending “out”, but I don’t care about trends , I do what I want. I remodeled my kitchen about a dozen or so years ago, espresso colored cabinets were trending then I think, idk, anyway, I went with white Shaker cabinets & now they’re “in style” I guess. I do notice in my area , at least, warmer kitchen cabinets in a wood finish seem to be the trend, if that’s important to you. It’s pointless chasing trends.

Trends tend to last 10 years so think about the impact of that down the road. Me personally - if it was my forever home I would choose what I love but if there is a chance you will sell soon that definitely needs consideration. Timeless and classic never go out of style.

I am glad you posted, I myself have been going back and forth about gray. I wish I could give you an answer but I myself am stumped about my own choices. Should I do another white kitchen or should I do what I love? I really like these pale gray kitchens I see. And other days I like the navy blue or dark gray grainy stained cabs.. So many options out there for us.
