The counter definitely has black..gray..tan and khaki colors.

Taupe is usually in the pink/beige color family, which does not work with maple and your granite. I'd definitely select a neutral from the green or green/yellow color family, like many of the Benjamin Moore historical colors--Carrington Beige, Wheeling Neutral, Richmond Gray, or Crown Point Sand. But you need to try them in your space on a large sample in different lights to see the way they will look with your cabinets and counter tops.

I used the taupe to paint a vanity in the bathroom and loved it..thought with the gray in the counter it would look nice..just didn't love it with my cabinets..good thing I didn't paint the island in that color..

It's very difficult to almost impossible for anyone to really "see" the color in your room unless they are there in person. The slight nuances of each color are only perceptible in real life.
