That was my very first thought! It is a wonderful working wood burning fireplace and I fear I that keeping a painted hearth clean would be difficult between debris and soot. Ideas for any other color?

is the teal colored item on the sofa a pillow? is the leather furniture grey? is the tv wall paneling and if so, is the rest of the room paneled. a few more picutures showing the rest of the area would be helpful. you can have a great space with just a bit of editing and additions.

Agree w/Lia 100%! I (personally) painted our ugly reddish brick hearths & surrounds ten or more years ago. If you prep it correctly, use the correct paint and application method(s), you will have minimal to no chipping, bleed-through. Cleaning w/b easy: 409 is what I previously used for all non-wood surfaces, lol. You can also sweep or used Swiffer Vac, etc., on the hearth. Back then, I used Kilz for brick as the primer (all products & techniques recommended by my painter and/or BM Store Manager.) Now, I would use a Houzz Ideabook & follow hers/his advice. Definitely paint the brick!
Your art appears to be hung a little high, might want to reorganize.

I would start by choosing a great area rug. Go to a specialty store since they will have a great selection. then choose one of the colors from the rug to use for accessories. It looks as tho you have paneling along one wall. I would replace it . I. Would also go to a fireplace store and get a different fireplace screen that will make a big difference. then choose artwork for your walls that compliments the colors you have chosen. You can choose photography and have it printed on canvas in one large piece orseveralsmaller ones with identical frames. It can be of some place you have been or long to go. If this move is not permanent, stop purchasing anything to go with something that you do not love. Is that a beam on the ceiling? Is the fan in the middle of the room? Furniture is cool colors and fireplace is warm so make all furnishings and walls cool. I would get paint strips and find the color of your leather and go two to three shades darker on the walls and then two to three shades lighter on the ceiling. Mantle is white so paint all stands white or change it all to black high gloss which is good with the TV as this is a family space. You also need a better arrangement for your art. I agree, more pictures as that fan tells me there is a lot more to this space than you are showing.

I think your brick fireplace is quite attractive with the varying brick patterns. Make the fireplace the focal point of the room by editing the mantle and hearth accessories. Your paint color is a mustardy brown whereas your brick appears to have peachy/pink tones. I would definitely suggest a lighter neutral on your walls as well as an Oriental rug in blues to add color, elegance and comfort to your space.

The space is actually not very big and the reason the furniture arrangement is weird. Its too big for the space and the recliner ideally should go but Hubby would DIE LOL. Those are beams on the ceiling. We have scraped down the popcorn texture in the section over the fireplace and painted the ceiling but are not finished yet. (BIG JOB) .The space in open floor plan to the kitchen it you turn around from where this picture was taken you would be looking at the kitchen.

I really need help picking a color palette for the whole space. The floors are mid tone the furniture is close to like a Navajo white. If I paint the fire place I can do whatever I want and I really like color.

It seems you need more lighting in the room. Additional recessed lighting in the ceiling or track lighting across the wood ceiling beam will illuminate the space. You may want to consider a white faux or wood blind for the French doors, topping it off with a decorative valance across the top. Painting the bead board wall a bright semi-glossy yellow ochre would look nice as well. Swing the sectional pieces closer together facing the TV more and get a plain white area rug with a soft nap/shag. Don't change the fireplace in any way. Its beautiful as is the furniture and flooring.

Greige is a great neutral that can't miss. Then you can add color with rugs, accessories, art, pillows, etc.

Hey, really nice kitchen, is it hickory? I would remove the round galleried end table, as I remember my mom having something like this. You need either no firescreen or a non-ornate one. You have a lot of framed family photographs - ok, but group them all together in one spot (near the kitchen) and free up the wall space for one good-sized painting. Take away dried flowers/silk flower arrangements. Put only 3 objects on the mantel (not photographs). And, as @vivm2007 suggested, paint the brown wall the exact color of your leather, but a couple of shades darker. Go for it!

I would try the couch as a low wall from the hallway but far enough away from the wall to give access path, then loveseat at right angle to the couch and then the chair next to the fireplace but keep linear. If you really want color find a rust high gloss to match the brick and do the TV wall. According on how brave you are teal is complimentary with rust and beautiful with gold/yellow and I would do the kitchen and door wall in teal. When working with color strips if you pick the third color down on one strip do the same for your second color as that keeps the balance and one will not overwhelm the other. The two "red" art pieces will look good on the teal so move them and I would group all your pictures as one huge rectangle with the bottom level to the bottom of the TV and go up to above at least two rows. Paint the mantle the same color as the rust wall. Your wood pieces will also look better with the rust.

You say you like colour and those panels above the TV are colour ideas? The colours in the carpet that michi posted or the teal and rust tones would work really well with the existing fireplace, which does have nice brickwork and features. How about finding a rug that you really like, that works with the sofas and go from there?

In my opinion, there are too many little things that clutter the space. First, the fireplace area - the mantle is too small and it's scale is highlighted with that white color. You need a bigger mantle. Also the firescreen is too busy and the style clashes with the rest of the room. A plain rustic iron firescreen (or paint the one you have to look like wrought iron) would look good. Something that would tie in with your rustic kitchen. If you got a wider, chunky rustic mantle in a dark color or the same color as your beams it would make the fireplace more modern (like the furniture that has to stay). I personally think that the color of the wall behind the tv is worse than the fireplace. Pull a neutral color from the brick and change the tone of the wall. I think I would go a lot lighter. If you take the accessories on the wall and mantle and group them together in a thoughtful way, it would make the scale much more pleasing to the eye. I know light neutral walls seem like they would be boring, but you can make it really interesting by changing that wall art. Group your family photos in like frames so that they are cohesive as one piece. Think of it as making one shape with the pieces. Be thoughtful about the wall behind the tv. Balance it out like you were painting a picture. And edit the mantle and hearth. I would do as much as possible before you paint the fireplace. I'm going to post pictures of my den. We painted it white and all the beams and woodwork on the french doors a dark brown. I'm thinking I need to put some shades or blinds on the doors, but mostly from glare. There isn't a privacy issue. I don't think this room needs color. It has too many textures to add color on top of that. Personally, I would remove every object except for the sofas that you say you have to keep (including the ceiling fan.) I would paint all of the woodwork (paneling, beam, windows) a white that relates to the upholstery. Get some very simple white drapes (same color family) that hang from just below the ceiling. Change the mantel to something with no molding that is approximately the same color as the brick. Get a very simple single-color rug - ok, maybe a groovy off-red shag. There's some color!

I think a rug like this one could pull it all together for you!

I tried sstarr93's furniture arrangement and it looks okay. I had to switch out the sofa and love seat position. All of the pieces recline and the love seat is not a "wall hugger" but the couch is. It really helped diminish the fireplace wall and opened up the room. I'll try to get a pic up tonight.
