You have too much furniture here. I's prefer only the bed and bedside tables on that wall. Can you raise the bed on risers so the mattress and table tops are level. Then change the lamps so you get a look based on this chart.

What's in the armoire? If it is a TV, you might remove the mirrors from the dresser and set the TV there. Will the lingerie chest fit in the closet? Window treatments would add a lot. You might find some to match the spread with the Greek key design on the edge. Greek key lamps could be nice.

All of your art/wall hangings are too high. Center them 5' above the floor, or hang 5" above funiture.

The armoire is where my husband puts his clothes. As far as painting the side tables, do you think I should change hardware ( knobs) to make them up to date? You think I should paint furniture that is hardwood ?
Should I change bed or headboard in you opinion? Any pictures of items you think would put the room would be appreciated.

Thank you for the pictures Nandina Home Designs one quick question the lamps you suggested to buy what dimensions, height ? If I change the bed or not? Reupholstered headboard or not in a neutral color?

The headboard is fine, but it looks sad with only those two pillows. Why not buy some large, thick European size (square) pillows (24 x 24" or 26 x 26") and some sham covers for them that coordinate with your bedspread and whatever window treatments you get. Depending on how wide your bed is, you might want two or three. Try that and see how it looks. If the railing still sticks out and doesn't look good, and/or you are uncomfortable sitting up in bed and reading, you can make yourself a padded headboard. Get some butcher paper or craft paper and tape long pieces together so you have a really large piece. Then tape the paper to your headboard and trace out the outline of your headboard just at the top of your mattress to the edges all around onto your paper. Now you have the shape of your headboard. With that, you can cut it out of 1/2 inch plywood, cover it with foam

Can you take out the lingerie chest in the corner and the red cube next to your dresser? Can you remove the pictures over the lingerie chest? I can't see very well the pictures over your bed, but now they are hung too far apart. If you like them and want to keep them, why not hang them one over the other on the left side and hang a single larger thing to the right of them.

Ideally, it would be great if you could take out the armoire, but we can't necessarily have hubby walk down the hall to get dressed, or can we? This may be a good time for you to do a serious purge and organization of your dresser and closet to make room for some of his things in the closet and dresser and then move the overflow and out of season things for both of you to a guest room.

Take a good look at your closet. There may be ways to add shelves or rods or an organizational system to your closet to allow a lot more things inside there than you might ever imagine.

If you raise your bed, that gives you space for lots of storage under the bed for what you are taking out of dressers and from your closet. They are plastic bags for longer term storage from which you can vacuum out the air to store things like out of season clothing and linens. You can buy or make open shallow boxes on wheels with handles to to roll in and out from under the bed.

Your lamps look dated. The shades seem small in proportion to the length of the lamp, and the shade color looks dark, although that may be the photograph. Compare your lamps with the lamps in the photographs put up by the other posters here and look at the proportion of the shades, their length and circumference relative to the height of the lamp.

I agree with taking things off your dressers. We all grew up seeing a vanity tray filled with scents on our mother's dresser, but we now know that they degenerate at room temperature and when exposed to light. Cologne and toilet water are best kept in the refrigerator in an opaque closed container and perfume kept in a dark cabinet or box at constant cooler (but not refrigerated) temperature. Buy or make trays to store your jewelry, or you can buy hanging jewelry holders at The Container Store. Do you need all those small photos? Honestly, can you even see them from the bed? Do you have a corridor or staircase wall that can be your peanut gallery :) that is, where you can put up photos of your family that are a goodly size (nothing smaller than 5x7) in coordinating frames. Then just have one photo in your bedroom. Forget the cloth on the dresser, it's too grandma-ish.

Another way of reducing objects in the room is to use wall lights on either side of the bed instead of table lamps. You don't need an electrician if you use the plug-in wall lamp that has the wiring that is covered and goes up the wall from the outlet. It is often swing-arm and can be adjusted side to side and often up and down as well.

Purging things feels like losing weight and it's a heck of a lot easier!!

Before painting your furniture, why not make the other changes and see how the room looks.

Once you take out the excess furniture and de-clutter, re-evaluate the wall color and decide if you want to lighten the wall color. Also, think about introducing another color into the room. You can do this with the shams, even very subtly, such as with welting, or a fluffy fringe and carry it through with a folded throw at the foot of the bed. If you find a piece of artwork you love to hang over the bed, that can inform your choice of accent color.

Blue or green would work very nicely. And speaking of green, once the armoire and lingerie chest are gone, a tall palm would look great in that corner and bring green and life to the room.

Loobab thank you for all your suggestions! You are the first who extensively touched on most of the furniture and layout. . As far as the mirror on dresser , do I remove it put possibly a TV or a new mirror?

Hi Olga- You are welcome! I meant to delete the sentences about making the headboard because I changed my mind, but didn't completely delete that part.

About the mirror on the dresser- Three section folding mirrors were used on the vanity tables of yesterday so a lady doing her hair could, by adjusting the mirrors on the sides and changing her position, check her hair on all sides and even the back. Depending on the length of the mirrors and their location, a woman might be able to adjust the mirrors and stand and see herself clothed from head to toe at all angles, even the back. I don't know if the mirror on your dresser serves that purpose. If it doesn't, you may want to rethink it. Do you do your hair at your dresser or in the bathroom? If you do your hair in the bathroom, you may not need a mirror in the bedroom at all, or you may like a decorative mirror, such as a starburst mirror and/or some other art.

If you remove all your bedroom mirrors and will be putting on your jewelry in the bathroom, don't forget to fully depress the stopper in the sink (or cover the drain with a washcloth) or you will be chasing your jewelry in the sink trap. Yes, been there, done that!

Some people are dead set against a television in the bedroom. Bedrooms are supposed to be for sleeping, quiet discussion, reading, and well, you know. On the other hand, if you or your spouse are in the most unfortunate situation of being unwell and spend a lot of time bedridden, you might want a television in the bedroom, in which case a wall mounted television facing the bed is the thing to do, and there are ways to camouflage it if you are so inclined, where the television looks like a mirror when it is off, or a work of art. Here are some ideas.

Loobab will probably change the mirror , do not need a three fold mirror. However, you made a valid point about the TV. Zone another note, can you give me ideas by picking some items as far as curtains and art that I can use. Oh yes, suggestions about the living room.Awaiting.....

Hi Olga- I like curtains in white, if that is the color of your bedspread, and buy simple ones to be hung on the rod that you show there. Since you have blinds to block the light, the curtains are just to look nice, and I wouldn't spend a ton of money on them either. Take a look at the different types of hanging hardware available and decide what you like. I would get curtains that extend to the floor in not too heavy a weight fabric. Making a valance is a lot of work and cost, I wouldn't bother, and it may be just too much in a small room.

I see that lovely icon above the lingerie chest. It is probably important to you have an icon in the room, so if it has an easel-back you can put that on your nightstand or dresser. or you can jerry-rig an easel-back for it. Or you can find a smaller icon to hang from the bedstead.

About art, I don't know what you like. Do you like fabric wall hangings or paintings of places or sunsets or posters of famous works of art? Three-dimensional collectibles such as vintage trays, foreign masks,head-dresses, plaster plaques, antique hand-painted china that can be displayed on the wall? When you have been to other people's houses or looked in magazines, what did you like? Not like? Before you rush to buy things, first take out the excess furniture and live with the space and decide how much of the space you want to cover with art or objects.

    Here's something you can try.

Did you know you can borrow art?

Some museums, universities and libraries have programs where you can borrow art for free! Here are just a few to give you some examples.

    https://aadl.org/catalog/browse/unusual

    http://www.westervillelibrary.org/art-prints

    https://listart.mit.edu/collections/student-loan-art-program

Ask your local librarian (the one at the reference desk) to help you find some local resources for this. These days, the reference librarians are computer and internet whizzes, I am in awe. When you borrow things and live with them a while, you'll know what you like and don't like.

You can also take books out about art and art history and see what you like, and what you don't.

You asked about a living room. What living room? Do you have another post up?

    Olga-
    Beautiful!
Are these for your bedroom or living room or both?
Loobab those are for the living room curtains , I will finish the living room and then tackle the bedroom.
Any ideas on lamps? What is your opinion on carpets? Which one do you like.

I really like the furniture you have in the room. The armoire and tall chest of drawers do look a little crowded in their current space. Do you need both? If not, removing one would make the room a little less crowded.

Put bigger lamps on the bedside tables. If not bigger lamp bases, maybe just bigger lamp shades would give the lamps a little more presence.

Remove the mirror above the dresser and replace it with a simple rectangular mirror mounted on the wall.

Would you consider removing the items on top of the low dresser, tall chest of drawers, and armoire? And even remove the art above the tall chest of drawers (it seems too high).

Your bedding is pretty, but if you want the room to feel different, I find new bedding to often have the biggest impact in a bedroom.
