Thanks. The wall with the armoire is where we have the TV now, but would like to free up that wall for our Player Piano. I definitely would consider painting the fireplace now, but not the spindles.....we have it planned for the future when we have less dogs and the kids are older.

What style is the player - grand, upright, etc. There looks to be room for it by the sofa or at the window.

It is an Upright player. The only other place it would fit would be on the wall of windows and it would cover up a good bit of the window if placed in that location

Paint it a warm white along with the stair rails. Tile over the fancy blue marble :) This will make a heck of a difference... Good luck!

Don’t tear out the all architectural element that n your home; you will turn it into nothing special. Sorry but that wall makes your home beautiful. IMHO

I agree that the wood mantel and shelving is very nice and adds interest to your home. I'd either paint it or re-stain it in a darker color, for an English library look. What I would do, however, is spend the money on replacing the very large window with something more interesting. Right now it's a very outdated look.

There literally is. not. space, even if you remove the mantel.

Find a way to make the TV console and player piano both fit on that long wall!! it will help if you make your furniture into an L, couch against the windows and chairs facing the fireplace, such that they would all have legs on the rug shown. then I think you'll find there's space to the right of the TV console for your piano, or you'll have to rethink some part of the plan.

Here, I painted the lower half of your library for you.

You might consider painting the top and bottom rails and trim pieces white and having the spindles replaced with metal spindles. Place pictures above the fireplace and a large painting or group of pictures on the center square upstairs, in order to cover a lot of the oak. You could also take the cabinet doors and have the centers replaced with glass. You can also paint the back walls of the insides of the open shelves white or your wall color. I would definitely replace the marble with tile or have it refinished.

THANK YOU acm!! What do you think about going dark with the mantle...like black or charcoal? Okay I finally agree the TV is too big, BUT what if we got a smaller TV and moved the mantle down say 8 inches? The mantle currently is at 65inches from the floor .

Gorgeous room, but what a dilemma. It's not really related, but I wonder how the oak looks with the floor in person. On my iPad the colors don't mesh, which makes me think painting the oak might be a good idea. But if they look good in person, then leave the oak.

I assume there just isn't another room for the piano or the tv?

The second photo stair rail update for down the road and color of black or white would look good. What are your furnishing materials and colors ? Adjacent spaces to have a better understanding to coordinate.

Carol you are correct there is no other place to put the piano or tv.
Jodie the room opens up to the kitchen with an eating area. We have the red sectional pictured below minus a couple of sections and a matching chair.
Behind the only solid wall in the room is a formal dining room which I am not opposed to converting into something else. But we really want the piano in the main room so we can all enjoy it.

Also Carol you are correct the floors are a totally different shade so they look okay together but not great. If I had an unlimited budget I would trade out all the oak trim, door frames, doors and paint the stair rails, but that is not in the budget.

Is there anywhere else, another room perhaps, for tv viewing? This room is for music, reading, conversation, dreaming....

And watching the fire, curled up with a great glass of port...

Unfortunately no other place for the tv....we only have this one main room that opens into the kitchen.

What about Stone or Overcoat for the built ins and Mountain air for the walls?

All stone paint surrounding cabinets off white..keep walls off white..will transform your room! No need to worry about the other wood throughout ...this wall stands alone!

After looking again......You could have the spindals and entire upstairs wall of cabinets painted white too and leave all the other wood trim throughout..wow looking up that wall all painted out and white stacked stone would be incredible!

Thanks, that does sound nice. I definitely can't so the spindles...too pricey for the budget. I am not a fan of white (I have 5 large black dogs and 2 kids), but will give it some thought. I need to figure out how to change the picture so I can see what it looks like painted in different colors.

Have you considered dragging the player piano up to the balcony? Would it fit in that niche between the bookcases? Does it have a remote?

You can paint it a neutral, gray or greige color.....does not have to be white and it can have a neutral warm stone.....

Why not make the dining room into either a TV room or a music room? You say above that you are open to using the formal dining room as something else.

As an example, we have a smaller TV in our main family room but the big one is in its own room with surround sound and recliners. Like a media room, but not so specific.

If you put the giant TV in the dining room, you can still have a smaller one in the main room with the red sectional and the piano.

You use the giant one when you want to watch a movie or sports or just when you want two TVs.

The dining room is not really big enough for all of us....we are a family of 5 plus 5 dogs...lol! I will take pictures of the space as soon as I get home, my daughter has the flu so it is a tad messy! We are waiting to paint the kitchen until we decide what to do with this area. We have added new light fixtures and curtains. Here is a picture from the realtor site of the kitchen

To be honest Jodie I have no idea! I am more confused than before. I really think painting it will make a huge difference but scared to paint the oak because I am not sure what color will look best and afraid I will not like it

The oak wood is dating it so painting it will improve the wall library of shelves... filling it with items and books will look fantastic in the color you choose.

Nothing to dark for cabinets..I would go with a warm neutral like BM Berber White 955 from the classic collection..

Here it is shown on the walls of this bathroom..really nice warm white..

Agreed with decoenthusiaste -- you could just paint the oak a nice light shade...here's an example of how it might look. :)

There are two large armoires in the room. Put the player piano in one spot and the tv in the other. The tv is too large to be placed above the fireplace and it would be too high for comfortable viewing.
The one thing that seems out of place is the giant multi-paned-window which clashes with the style of the two-level woodwork.
I would paint all the oak woodwork a darker color and replace the current windows with new framed windows in one of the traditional styles suggested above.

Thanks Tilemode that REALLY helps. Fitz replacing the windows is definitely not an option. Our house is also stucco which would add even more $$$$.

Not my first choice but we have our 65” TV over our fireplace we had no choice open concept with both sides of the room walkways...but I actually love it..we have comfy swivel rockers that work really nice for leaning back and viewing TV...you have a much better set up with high ceilings a 60” will look small with that large 2 story open ceiling....you have a lot of great options when only have to worry about one focal point!
