I like it.

However, the traditional wood mantel gets a bit lost on the brick. I think I'd switch out the mantel to something thicker, simpler and more rustic looking...similar to the width and wood tone as your side cabinet end panel. Have the mantel go all the way across. If too much brick for you, add drywall over the top half above the mantle - but I don't think that's necessary.

Since there is nothing on the mantle anyways, I would just remove the mantle. A german wash or whitewash could be nice if you're looking to lighten it, but I like the brick with your wood trim. I would get some art to go under those spotlights.

I agree with Emily - Remove the mantle.

I think that totally removing the mantel will make it look like too much of an expanse of brick with nothing to break it up...I like it as it is now. Perhaps it needs to be painted a lighter color...

If you plan on removing it or changing it out, I would invest in a quart of paint and see what that does first. Not much to lose.
