I like a mix of wood and painted furniture so I would leave it. I would just clean it up with Howard’s restore a finish. Nice little corner!

That is an end table and not a breakfast table. You will bang you knees and its not large enough. You need something without a lip. But back to the question, it is a nice table, but I am not opposed to recycling pieces if you will use them just make sure you have a good coat of varnish/urethane on the piece before you paint it in case you want to take it back to stained later.

Ah yes, we know it’s not technically a table for eating but we are repurposing it for that. The nook itself is set a little low so there is room to sit. We’ve eaten there twice already!

It's a Duncan Phyfe style, not a Phyfe, right? Anyway, you could see if you can refinish the top first. If that doesn't do the job, paint it. I agree it is not really a table to eat at, but it could work with a wider top.

Refinish it since the wood links to your floors, but add a white Eames chair or two.

I assume it’s DP style as well— the thrift shop had it labeled DP but it was a HFH restore and the table was only $50.

so what did you end up doing? I have a DP dining table that was in my family but I'm not enamored with it and I am also thinking about doing something different with it as well.

A glass round could be used to make the top larger. There are little clear bumpers to keep it from slipping. They are available at Pier 1 and other stores.

I'm not in favor of painting sound mahogany furniture just because it's not ones taste. Once painted, that's it. Now, if the shellac/varnish has become checkered or discolored, that is another matter altogether - something major will have to be done. Even then, I'd look for a manufacture's stamp under the table. That would help me make my decision. Sometimes it just needs the old varnish removed, some restraining and then re-varnishing...done by a pro.
