Living Room Overhead Lighting

Currently, our LR does not have any overhead lighting. It gets pretty dark in the evening and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to install some sort of overhead lighting or just add more lamps. Any thoughts on whether overhead lighting is essential from a design aspect, or is it more functional? TIA
