Pottery Barn states that the bed is made from solid Manayo wood, and Indonesian hardwood. At least you won't have to worry about damaging a wood veneer on the edges while sanding.

Did you refinish the bed? I have the same collection, am also thinking of refinishing.

I sanded off all of the finish with a random orbital sander. To finish the wood, I used a hemp oil, but in retrospect, I wish that I would have used something a little more durable. My husband stands and talks to me before he leaves for work and puts his foot up on the edge, and there are footprints!!! So I need to resand and then finish it differently. As far as the upholstery, I cut a thin (1/4 inch) piece of plywood to fit inside the frame of the headboard and the same for the footboard, then I got 1 inch latex foam and cut it to the right size, covered that in batting, and then covered that in my fabric. I used spray glue to attach the foam and batting, then stapled the fabric around all of it and stapled it to the back. Hope this helps!!

weed, try wiping it with mineral spirits, and then applying a top coat like this (I like Satin)

2-3 coats will be perfect.

I'd have you try Deft, but it's water based. since you already coated it w/all that hemp oil, you should stick to an oil based top coat. the mineral spirits will clear off any residue before you use the general finishes.

also, to attach the upholstered part, we screwed through the back into the front, making sure that the screws weren't too long to go through. We made sure it was a pretty tight fit, so it would stay on.

I love what you did. I want to refinish mine as it is also scratched .. this furniture line gets scratched up so easily.

Very nice job. I have same collection but yes, it scuffs easily. I like the dark stain. Would appreciate recommendations on what type of stain best matches it- so I can cover up the scuffs. Thanks in advance!

if the support leg in the middle matches the rest of the bed, bring that into a paint store. they should be able to help you choose a matching stain or may advise on some other product. then go to an art store and find a really good quality, tiny brush. you'll want to apply the stain only to the scratches and not get it on the surrounding wood. practice in a less-noticeable area (you can quickly wipe the stain off before it dries).

don't use those furniture touch up pens or crayons. they're crap. the ink in the pens fades to a completely different color over time (at least, the water based ones do). the crayons never seem to really fill in and can wipe off easily.

I’m looking to purchase a used Sumatra set, and this thread came up when I was searching for makeovers of it. Thanks for all the info.

Does anyone know how you can, after sanding the Sumatra pieces, make it look similar to the current seadrift color that PB is using in their Sumatra collection now?

If you don't have a local PB store to visit, I'd contact PB and ask if they can send you a sample piece of wood. I'd take that sample to a big box hardware store (or ACE), and see about getting a stain that closely matches.
