Two questions in one! Loft privacy and TALL window help needed!

Hey y’all!

I‘m moving into a very cute two bedroom, two bathroom lofted ADU. The main bedroom is a loft with a half wall overlooking the main living area, and I’m in love with all the light the giant windows are providing. The problem is, the second floor windows line right up with the level of the loft AND a window in the neighbors house, which I’m assuming is a bedroom. I like my privacy, but I like light too, so I‘m hoping to come up with a creative solution that is light and airy but will provide privacy at night. I’d love to hang a simple panel of chute, somewhat sheer curtains across the expanse of the space, however I’m running into an issue due to the slanted vaulted ceiling.

Alternatively, I could cover the upper windows but coming up with an attractive, minimalist solution that still allows light in while renting is stumping me. I’d idealy cover the windows and leave the loft space open as I live alone, but either situation is challenging. Any ideas? I’m trying to keep this very clean and simple.

Tl;dr

-need privacy solution for lofted bedroom. Open to some kind of panel in the loft itself, or an affordable and renter friendly solution for top windows in main living area.

Plants on the ledge and/or an indoor tree. Won't help with temperature regulation.

I’m big into plants and was definitely hoping to keep the ledge free for lots of plants!

Then I think the plants will be enough of a screen. Test it out with empty pots, I bet it blocks off the neighbor's window entirely!

The other window will be easy to cover with sheers if you need; if you can't put holes in the walls command hooks should work to hold the rod if you choose a light one.

Cellular shades in white ( or slightly off white), translucent ( available in different degrees ), not light blocking.

Thanks Lindsey! If I cover the top windows I’m hoping it will be something to keep the light out when I need it in the summer, this place has no ac and i know summer will be INTENSE. Those windows are south facing!

IMO the people next door would be hard pressed to see anything in your space .

I would get sheer drapes for the entire big window. Just hang the rod as high as you can without hitting the window. It looks like you should be able to.

Then remote control cellular blinds are the way to go :)

For heat-control, I agree with lindsey. I'm not sure where you are located, but we were in an apartment with no AC for several years with north and south facing windows. We ended up getting two standing AC units and putting foam in the windows with blackout curtains over that. I hated blocking the light, but it was honestly the only way to get any sleep.

Hi Emily, I’m in Portland. It’s cloudy most of the year but in the summer it’s pretty darn sunny and the sun comes up REALLY early! I have two portable ac units but I’m considering asking my landlord to have wall vents installed so I can place those independent of the windows, although I’m still looking into the cost of this. Still, I’d like to keep the sun out and keep the place cool to begin with, if possible!

Yes. Most convenient though.

I would hold off until you see how much of a problem it really is. That neighbour house which is so close might block a good bit of the direct sun.

If you have a really nice landlord s/he might make this investment!

Good news! The landlord is installing solar shades on all four large windows! They won’t be arriving until mid March, so until then, I’ll have to just make do and make sure I wear pants at all times!
