Love the vertical look of the cabling! Do I have to worry about anyone slipping through? Does this idea meet code in most states?

There are many states and local jurisdictions that are amending the way cable is used. Such new requirements may include a 2.5" spacing instead of 4", and through bolts into wood members with large washers on the back side instead of lag bolts. It is best to check with your local building department right before you start the project.

4" spacing is typical code, HOWEVER, you cannot allow the cables to be easily spread out that would allow a small childs head to get into the space PLUS the cables have to withstand a side force of a 200# man falling against then which I doubt these would pass. You could have spreader bars located in 2-3 foot intervals going up the cables that would alleviate the spreading issue and make sure it is securely bolted to floor and ceiling so the force of 200# would not pull out screws.
