If you don’t want to paint it, then what else would you do? Rip it out?

It it wood flooring? You could sand it and restain but that would be a pain to do.

What style are you going for?

Removing it would be next to impossible as I presume it was installed with adhesive - there are no nails showing at all! Paint, stain, white-wash. I'm transitioning from country to contemporary.

Could you sand down the finish and white wash or pickle it for a lighter finish while keeping the wood grain and texture?

A unique color of wood stain such as green or blue might be unique if you are opposed to neutrals.

Maybe test a small place down behind one of the tables in the corner to see what whitewash would look like. Just some white paint thinned out with water or something. I’m sure you can google how to do it....but test first....

Good idea, I think the color of the wood is nice, like a walnut or pecan...

I could totally see the fireplace lightened up working against the wood....

...even a solid black would look good and put a colorful art piece up

I hesitated to paint the 1980’s knotty pine paneling when we renovated, but am so pleased with the result. It’s light, airy, and does not look like boring drywall. We painted all of the railing and spindles too. It looks much more contemporary.
