Breadbox House Help!

I just bought my first home, and I need some design help. I have orange-ish wood (not particle board) wood trim EVERYWHERE. The doors are all wood with brass fixtures, and I'm not sure what to do about that. Re-staining all the wood is out, since there is so much of it, but I could either paint the walls to downplay the orange wood, or paint it out. I don't know which is better. Secondly, and probably more important, I have no idea how to decorate this space. It feels so vacant and unassigned - and don't even get me started on that weird pellet stove! It's efficient and warm but looks ridiculous on that wall. Anyhow, ANY suggestions at all would be more than appreciated. Thanks!

Pretty space. Whether or not you paint the trim that’s up to you. Soft gray greens and soft blues or warmer whites go good with your trim color. I’m no pro, others might have better suggestions, but I would live there for a year or two before I’d paint the trim. First thing I’d do is remove that quasi mantle above the stove.

First, no one will notice your interior during day light hours with that amazing view! I think the wood suits the house's age, character and setting. I would change the walls to a crisper white or a color for what you have now is a bit drab and yellow in my opinion. However, I do not like creamy or warm whites, so if you do take my advice with a grain of salt. Congrats on you beautiful new digs.

Your big open space is somewhat defined now, but could be more so. A larger rug in the living room area and more seating and a coffee table will further identify this as your lounge area. Lighting is more difficult. You'll need numerous lamps around the perimeter if there are no floor outlets.

I would like the trim better if it were painted but it isn't unsightly.

The 3 little shelves in the dining area don't work for me. I'd center the sideboard on the table. When choosing new artwork I'd skew large or group pieces. Yes, enjoy your views, the big vistas make a smallish house feel much larger.

I’d take down the three floating shelves and the disproportionately large shelf over the pellet stove. Add a large piece of art over the stove. As mentioned, move the sideboard over a bit to the left. Definitely get a larger rug in the living area. I generally prefer painted trim, but, in this case, it suits the house as is. Live there a while before you make big changes.

I would take down the floating shelves, put a real mantle above the pellet stove with built out sides. There are lots of ideas on pinterest.

Unlike others I would paint the orange wood trim out. It isn't around the big openings into the kitchen or the other big opening. It clashes with the floor. I just don't think it does much for the room.

You can replace the brass fixtures on the doors - or paint them.

It is unfortunate you cannot see the absolute beauty of your wood. It frames your view to perfection. The pellet stove is in an odd spot. Perhaps a conversation space could be created and give it some reference. If you need to fill your home adding leaves to your table and one of those sectionals would fill the place up.

Pellet stove means you have a chimney. Replace it with a fireplace (gas, if you have it, otherwise I would go propane.) Design the new fireplace and nix that strange mantel.

Paint the walls something with a green undertone to work with the wood. Try B.M November Rain. it is great with natural wood.

Consider something like this gorgeous teal velvet sofa.

Hi... there in mountainous ridge area!! how nice.... well the 3 little shelves, not imo. But the one over stove - might be fine lowered - as though a fp: with large basket which seems you have... to add width on floor below it....

Boots by the door? What if instead of one of the chests, a good-looking bench of sorts with cubbies, maybe coat 'closets' ....

Thank you all so much for the great advice! I love the idea of artwork above the pellet stove! I do have propane, so changing the pellet stove out for a propane fireplace is a definite option - I guess it would depend on which one is more affordable to operate in the long run.

As far as the wood trim goes, my house was built in 2007, so there really isn't any historic/craftsman feel to the trim. I do waver a bit on the idea of painting it out or just changing the wall color to downplay the orangey-ness. I am loving all your viewpoints, so thank you!

@JudyG Designs I love the November Rain color - it really seems to go great with the natural wood!

One last thing, my 'real' front door enters right into the living space with not a lot of options for making an entryway. Any suggestions on how I can make this not feel so awkward?

Is stove across from entry? was wondering about heat source with 2 cabinet/ shoe type thing, helping warm them up... idk, idea.

I suggested a teal sofa to work with the wood and November Rain, But, I see you have all your furniture. Still sticking with a teal and I see there maybe some of that in your rug.

Paint the door, inside and (outside if it works with your exterior colors), teal.

I suggest you add more trim to the door and paint it the teal, as well. It will trick the eye into thinking the door is larger…more important. This is Aegean Teal which is recommended by B.M. as a coordinate with November Rain. Then change the door knob.

It is a gorgeous space! Don't worry too much about the wood, once everything is in place you'll see how it adds a lot of character to the rooms.

We think the problem here is that the areas are not well defined, that's why the space feels so empty. One thing that can help you better define the space is furniture. You have a lot of space and natural light, don't be afraid to pick something bold, I think something like this would look great:
