Lots of Houzzers have painted brass, although it is making a come-back right now. Get heat proof black paint. Might check with a specialty fireplace store if you can't find it at the local hardware.

I've used high heat black spray paint on 5 brass fireplaces. Saved me a ton and looks great. You just need to take it apart and take your time in spraying. It's worth it. I'd do it again if I was in that position. Especially if you want to save some $$'s.

You can definitely paint your frame, it will save you a lot. You can also paint the surrounding tiles or retile that area (it shouldn't be very expensive but you should use a pro) to complete the look.
