It needs a brick facade to match the rest of the house - at least on the bottom. I'm guessing either you cannot find the brick to match or you can't afford it..... I think painting the door black would help.

You've got 2 completely different houses pasted together. An the door squeezed in on the right offends the eye with it's lack of symmetry. Your windows need shutters to match the others on your house, but you don't have room because the one window is too close to the door. If you can afford it, move the door to the position of the right window & wall in the current door location. Then you could add shutters too.

Honestly, I would also try to disguise the addition from the street:
I think I'd jackhammer up across the driveway & plant tall-growing shrubs across the drive (you'd need to leave a break somewhere to get from house to drive). Leave a walk-way size space behind the shrubs. Photinias are low maintenance & really fast growers.

! would suggest adding a 6' deep landing in front of the door and adjacent window covered by a small gable; add shutters to the remaining 2 window; add a 4' deep arbor on the remainder of the front of the addition.

I think you did a much nicer job of adding windows and the door than a lot of people do when they convert their garage. But the driveway and the different materials say it used to be a garage.

I think the big evergreen at the edge of where the house and family room should be removed. It makes it look like that was where the house ended, which in this case, is not what you want. But it is too overpowering. Put in another alberta spruce like the other 2 to make it look like the same garden as the rest of the front.

Had not thought about the tree coming out and the gravel. Those are easy fixes! I like the gable idea over the door and windows also..please keep ideas coming... you all are opening many ideas ...thanks to all

Suburan Design, can you explain more about the 4 ft arbor on the remainder of the addition... like your ideas of the gable and the shutters. Also, should we go with shutters that are standard size or long and narrow?

Should I paint the door red to match the front door?

No, I would not paint the new door red as it draws the attention away from the main entry and would look odd. I think the main thing that would help is brick instead of vinyl on the old garage/ new family room.

I would use shutters to match the main house and I agree that you should not paint the doors to match. As for the arbor, I would use one, supported by brackets, between the new gable and the tree on the other end.

Colourful canvas blinds on the windows of the weatherboard building might be fun. They would add some heavy shadow to give the fascade some relief. A half domed one on the main window of the brick building in the same colour might unite the buildings.
