Pruning, the fun begins

Well, I got a start on pruning yesterday I got 8 completed. But some were itty bitty and didn't need much other than removing old leaves and a little bit of clean up.

My one year old Savannah my beasty girl, was huge she probably had 10 really nice canes so I brought her down to a manageable size she looks great even after transplanting.

Flamingo rosita was planted in June and she was so huge I didn't even know where to start. She had two canes that were over 10' tall and she was just a massive shrub but I got her cleaned up she's going to be a great rose. She's not even in the greatest place and I basically ignore her and she has just gone crazy.

And then there is Dark Desire that is just sitting like a lump. It went in in June and looks the same as it did. And, it is in a prime location.

My rock and roll rose doesn't look all that good. A couple of the canes are Brown this will be the last year for rock and roll unless it takes off. It hasn't put on hardly any growth.

Sunset dreams has purples splotches on the canes that one may have to go as well which is too bad because it is a nice short little peachy colored rose.

I also noticed that in my pots there are little feeder roots up at the top which tells me I'm not deep soaking them enough.

For those of you pruning dozens to hundreds of roses, I don't know how you have time or energy to do them all.

I will just keep plugging along and get them all dondone.

Happy pruning !

Wahooo Kristine!! I bet it felt great to just putz around out there. What do the purple splotches mean , and do you mean you are getting rid of the whole rose ? Or just the cane .

I have no idea what to do with flamenco Rosita . Other than move all the roses out of its way because there is no sign of it stopping ! I can't tell you how grateful I am that I accidentally planted it where I did . It happened to go dead center in the back of my island bed and anywhere else it would have been a mess . I wish it would sport a lighter color so I had more!

On my Sunset Dream, all of the canes have purple spots. Hopefully it isn' the kiss of death.

Lily, when you told me how huge your FR got, I planned accordingly. She can go crazy. And then there is Dark Desire right next to FR seemingly with no inclination to Grow. Hopefully that one goes crazy this year.

Good grief now it decides to snow when I'm out in the middle of pruning it just figures doesn't it

The rose can must be embarrassed to show their problem in the blank photos. Try clicking, they may appear.

Thank you, mine actually look like the first picture. I never had blackspotted leaves a.d all the canes have it. If I cut it off there would be nothing left . It might have to go.

Not great Pictures but I hope you can tell

If it's over wintering blackspot with what would one spray that?

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw thanked Vaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley

You would use any type of spray for black spot fungus in the spring. If it is a fungicide , it will work.

Sorry .. oldrosarian .. when should we do that ? Before leafing out or after they are out ? Thanks :)

o dear, I just sort of ignore the purple spots...

I would like to ignore them to but they were so startling and the rose didn't come that way and it's only one year old so I'm assuming that it's not anything very good.

It's only a year old it's never done very well . If it doesnt it pull out of this I may just replace it. The only problem is the only place I've seen it is from Palatine and then there's a minimum order of 4 roses which I do not need 5 more roses.

Fortunately that is the only rose that I've seen that purple spot on so hopefully it's just gonna be on that 1 rose.

If the spots are on the canes, you would get a better coverage of the canes if you sprayed before the leaves got in the way. A beautiful rose from Palatine, called Sunset Dreams, the canes are always loaded with spots. That means I have to spray even if I don't see the spots. They will be there in the spring.

Would sulphur spray work? Is that the purpose of lime-sulphur spray or does the lime just serve as a defoliant.

Oldrosarian, do you have that rose? Does it give you problems as well?

Kristine, thanks for bringing up pruning. I swear I never know when I'm supposed to prune and now with crazy warm weather here... My philosophy is "do what you think is right and you'll make the rare mistake..." So, I started cleaning up, stripping leaves and pruning, too. I have about 10 done out of 70 roses.

So that's what it means when there's a lot of little roots at the top of the pot? Not enough deep watering?

Thank you Oldrosarian for the photos. Very helpful! I see spots, too!

Towandaaz, I am not totally sure but it seems like that must be what those little tiny roots are because it was a when Matt of them when I tried to fluff up the soil. So that tells me that roots are probably coming to the surface to get water I'm not sure what else it would be.

I still have several to prune and the pruning isn't the big deal it's getting all those leaves off the didn't drop. Normally most of the leaves are gone and it's an easy process , but, taking off those little teeny tiny leaves off of my minis are a pain.

I think those are the feeder roots, maybe someone else can verify?!

I'm fixing to go ahead and start my pruning, of the cold hardy ones anyway. But right now I'm cleaning out a grapevine that got some type of briar in it when I was so sick la st year and the year before I can't recall if I was sick, or just didn't get around to it. So I'm pruning it, cleaning the briar out, and never ending oak trees that come up. Any body want some oak trees for Shipping lol

You can keep your oak trees, Alana, but I'd be happy to send you some of my Redbuds!

Oh dear, I was just about to purchase a Red Bud is that a spreader?

I don't think it's known to be, but LOVES my soil. At least they're easily recognizable with their pretty heart-shaped leaves and easy to remove if you get them young.

It is not unusual to have a rose in your garden that causes one nothing but problems. It isn't the gardener's fault, even though they feel it is something they are not or should be doing for the rose. If you get a rose from a well known nursery that everyone says positive things about, the rose should grow ok. But if you get it from a company that isn't a nursery, take care. I like to try different roses, so off I go in the spring to Walmart or Home Depot. I check carefully at the base of the canes for fungal problems. When I get home, I cut the rose down to 6 inches to try and match the poor, short roots. I pot it up and give it liquid fertilizer something like fish. If it is a good rose, then it will respond. If it going to be a frail grower and give lots of trouble, then it is dropped kicked over the fence. Having said all that, sometimes what looks like a good rose has just been budded poorly ( poor bud eye) or is a dud. Yes there are roses that are duds. Gardeners need to stop blaming themselves.

My job called me this morning and asked if I wanted to take the day off ? They were overstaffed. Heck yes, I took the day off.

I got 8 more roses pruned.

oldrosarian, I too like to go get these "body bags" from Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes. Don't know why - I have roses coming from ARE, Regans, Palatine, etc. Just a rite of spring I guess. I have a Red Masterpiece that is quite a few years old and blooms beautifully. I was interested to see that you fertilize with fish emulsion when you pot it up. Do you give it full strength as instructed on the bottle or do you make it weaker? What about manure or alfalfa tea? Also, what do you put in the planting hole? I just got back from SW Fertilizer in Houston - the Neiman Marcus of fertilizer stores - and got fish meal, kelp meal, Mills Magic Rose Mix and some other organic elixirs. Would I help the rose by adding any of this to the bottom of the pot I am planting them in? I also trim the canes back. I know their roots are compromised, but think its fun to see if I can coax a beautiful rose out of these body bags.

I finished all of the roses in the back yard. Only 4 left in the front . Unfortunately they are all Julia Child florabundas, such a pain.

Beverly hadn't lost one single leaf

She was a pain but looked really healthy.

Poor Dick Clark had a funky cane

I sure hope I dont have to give him the shovel

Olivia Austin and Winchester Cathedral had tons of teeny canes less than pencil size

Hope I didn't go too crazy
