I think a horizontal slat fence might look good and highlight the architectural style of your house. There are a ton of images of them here on houzz.

oneofeleven and nolam--thanks for the stone/wood combo ideas. I was thinking only about weathered wood, but some combo could be fun.

anne dee, I love natural wood! The front yard is very shallow, so getting it much closer to the house would be tough. It's about 18-24 inches from the curb. Eventually, I'll have landscaping between the fence and the curb!

Oops: I went by the place yesterday (I don't have possession yet) and the fence is set back a bit more than I thought. It's still not a lot of space, but it's probably four feet.
