I would work with a local designer/architect to get through the design, plans and permtting process. The idea I would suggest is to build a gable roof, possibly with an arched vault, back into the main roof line. The width of the existing stair is appropriate, as it doesn't interfere with the sight lines of the windows from the outside or in.. I suggest, if bldg dept allows, to build the top step deeper from front to back, and possibly build stone plinths up to the height of the stone wainscot, flanking both sides of the steps. Place square or round columns atop the plinths, to support the new roof above. None of these photos is perfect, but you get the idea--like the tapered columns on the one photo, actually! This would be a nice entry detail for your fine home.

What a pretty color scheme. It really warms up the look of the house. I would paint both the white window frame on the door and the safety bracket on the screen door (so it doesn't stick out) dark blue. In the meantime I would put two huge flower pots /urns directly in front of the stair railings on either side of the sidewalk. Fill them with colourful annuals and it will look fantastic against your new house colour. As for the entrance, I particularly like the Case design from the suggestion before me. I has both the peak and interior arch with simple posts. The clean lines would look great on your house.

Hm... I have a kind suggestion. I like the idea of houssaon, perhaps add an arch above the doorstep. Personally I like houssaon's Mt.Baker arch. Because it gives your yellow house a very warm, cozy and inviting feel. But don't stop there, you need a wider doorstep. I drew this on MS Paint, hope u can understand it. The red circles on the 2nd image would be potted plants, flanking the front door. I came across an image of 2 blue almost square planters on houzz, I remember that there were a mixture of ferns, hydrangeas and some other plant in it. It looked amazing! Also, perhaps a change pathway leading to your door step? Maybe some red masonry. But these are just simple suggestions. I'm sure you'll get more ideas from other with more experience. One last thing though... I see a lot of green in that picture, which I like. But I think it needs a bit more colour how about some blue hydrangea or red petunias? :D Hope your makeover goes great! have a nice day.
