You have options!

The most effective solution is going to depend on how you intend/expect to use the space. If you think you will be using the lounge often, it will be nice to have an entrance from the hallway as to defer consistent traffic through the kitchen into the lounge. Think about flow and layout of your kitchen to determine whether a traffic pattern will intrude too much into the function of your kitchen and decide from there. The location of the existing doorway does not look to be too inconvenient for furniture layout in the lounge, it may be helpful to sketch out some layout options on trace paper or mylar to determine your structural preferences.

How do you get from the garage to the kitchen?

Thanks for the comments. We dont use the garage, its a 1930s house it only fits a 1930s car hehe. Actually we`re going to convert half of the garage to another lounge/playroom.

The kitchen door is going to be reversed, that was a mistake on the plan.

Can certainly see that having two doors is beneficial. I`m leaning towards having it reinstated to be honest.

I would re-open up the doorway to the lounge. It's hard to tell if you have the space, but have you considered switching your plan around and making the front of the lounge space a galley kitchen with a breakfast nook area in the bay window?

I only mention it because it is hard for most people to figure out a living room furniture arrangement in a small space with a bay window at one end. Most sofas or sectionals will be way too big for the space. Going with a smaller eat in kitchen up front and putting the larger living space towards the back of the house gives more options for furniture. You can make a designated dining space between the front and back areas if you need a bigger table in addition to what would fit in the bay window, but leaving it open would give future homeowners more furniture arrangement options. Putting the kitchen up front (with the bricked up door opened back up) also makes it closer to the garage/front of the house for putting groceries away.

thanks. space is fine at the front, it's about 4m x 4m. the bay has a two seater sofa and the left wall a 3 seater. if it moved up we could get the door access but would be a bit tighter.

Very similiar layout to a house I lived in in England. I had a door into the lounge there that we used often I'd say as long as the wall it's on will still fit a sofa keep the door.

The thing w pocket doors is they can be a bit of a pita to have to keep opening/closing if youre going in and out of the room - so you tend to either leave them open, or closed. Having the hall door would give you extra flexibility in how to use the space. I would expect there would be times youd want to have them closed because of noise and commotion in the kitchen so access via the hall would be useful. Or conversely, opening all the doors on 1st floor would give you more openness /airiness when you want that.

I dont see that there would be much of anything that would have to go in that corner anyway - youd still be able to fit a sofa on that wall, plus theres several other options.

thanks , yes think it's a good idea to put the door back in there. it will give us options and even could keep it locked if we don't use it and put larger sofa in. there is an issue of a bit of wall that sticks out near the windows that limits sofa position, but may put a bookshelf along it as it's a wide room and then move the sofa along.

The use of "lounge" gave you away to me. I prefer the door being restored aswell. It provides a more circular flow overall less dead ends.

If you'd like to post pics once the work is done, I'm sure you'll get lots of help with furniture arrangement.

Hi - definitely open up that door to the front lounge. Have you thought about maybe putting the kitchen where the dining is planned and the dining room next to the lounge? Might be a better flow - and you could keep the pocket door open for a more "open-plan" look.

Marta, the current kitchen is where the dining area is going and there isn't enough room. we thought about extending but it was too expensive so this is a compromise.
we are also converting the garage front to a playroom/lounge to regain some living space. that will come off the hallway by the front door.
